After far too many hours spent on this, here are the pregen character sheets I've made for chapter 2. These are in the format of the DDXP character sheets and have have mechanical corrections applied and have been levelled with the information provided by WOTC. UPDATE: mithreinmaethor used my master file to give the same service to the Free RPG Day Dark Sun characters which you can also find below.
UPDATE: v1.8 of the DDE Level 2 Sheets uploaded

Cool - you gonna put a download for those up? Would give us more options.
I was gonna do that too, but I have to work on the monster and treasure cards for chapter 2 still and my vacation days are running out.
It's a shame about the pregen hand outs - they're slick looking, but they just don't completely cut it in that format, I feel.
BTW: The colours in open office for the background header of at-will and encounter powers is 'green 5' and 'chart 5' respectively.

I've got a couple of these characters at the table. I was going to let the players level them up themselves if there were no updated sheets.

I dont have a way to upload them to the internet once I am done. I finished 2 before soccer took me away from the work.

can the players know the criteria for leveling up their characters, or is that meta-gaming?

They are preleveled for you. So the DM will hand you a slip with the updates or you can download the 2nd level copies of the pregens from here. Other than that you dont get to make the character choices.
