Hey guys, I have been kicking around an idea for a campaign to be run via the internet. I would require each participant to have a webcam for viewing of their battle mats (to show that they and the other players were all placed correctly) and dice rolls (which would be into a bowl that has a flat bottom), an RPGA/DCI card, and the full version of the character builder (so they could track the character beyond 3rd level), and lastly a free voice chat client called Ventrilo (so that everyone playing could talk freely with each other). What I don't know is if this is all that would be needed to run a sanctioned game via the internet? Or even if it is possible to hold a sanctioned game this way? I would appreciate all the help that is available for making this vision a reality. ***EDIT TO AD*** ventrilo.com/

I would be interested in learning about this and if it is indeed possible. I'm new to D&D and I don't know of any one else in my area who would be interested in playing. One could use Skype since it's mac and pc friendly and there could be a way of doing it (webcam etc.) like you mentioned in your first post.
This would be brilliant if it was possible!

Good news! This is, indeed, all fully legal, and if run as an RPGA "Private Game" will even earn the GM (or GMs if you take turns) DM Rewards. This is clarified a little in the RPGA Character Creation Guide available from the D&D Events Downloads page (note - this document is slated for an update early next week). Since it sounds like you're running a custom campaign, you'll really just want to review the sidebar on page 2 "Rules for Home Games". The rest of the document is a good read, but pretty much only applies as much or as little as you want it to.

Thanks Guys for getting back to me on this, where others can also benefit from it. I am especially grateful for the detailed pointers and links .
Is there any way this thread (or even a mini guide to the concept) can be posted where it will be seen by more users? If so, please pass it along to whoever would handle it.
Thanks Again

I am going to be working on a general site FAQ for D&D over the next couple of weeks, and WOlfStar76's post (or a summary of it) is something that will go in there.
I am glad that your question was answered!

I highly recommend MapTools for all your Virtual TableTop needs. I've been using it since May of 2007, when the test rules for 4e were posted on ENWorld. It will save you the Video camera and the dicerolling, and the frameworks (I use DeviantNull's) are top notch. I run a bi-monthly game, and the site even has RPGA games run almost every weekend. I can answer any questions, but the site has a very welcoming community. rptools.net/

While I appreciate your suggestion Pink, to use RPtools (which I have reviewed in the past); I am actually going to be holding sesions that have at least half of the players at the table with me and 1-2 players (in most cases) via internet. There may come a time when a more virtual style of play works for a group I host, but that time is not now.
My question was not what other ways are there to host games online, because I feel that most of those other options strip the game of much of the depth that it has to offer.

I have not had a split game yet, so I can't attest to how that would work, I was just offering a suggestion.
However, the rest of my post still stands. I know that the community at RPTools does official RPGA games because I and two of my players started it up a year and a half ago. And I was gaining points with my last online campaign. They all have RPGA#s and the reporting is the same as a face-to-face game.
Good luck with your new campaign.
