You're missing an entire class of fans here: those who will buy 5e just to support the hobby and see what WotC does. I'm not necessarily one of these people - I am happy with both 3.5 and 4e (and play them both regularly) but I don't tend to spend a lot of money on my hobby. If 5e came out tomorrow, I would probably put in plans to get it at some point (even if only the core books) just to see it, unless I had a chance to review it without buying them and found that I truly hated it or...

I'd say it's different play styles and experiences. I wouldn't say you've made them paranoid, but perhaps they haven't learnt the benefits of courage and recklessness. Once people start to turtle, it's hard to get them to poke their head out.
Perhaps you need to run a Lair Assault for your group for them to get over their fear of dying. Use your current campaign to fix this problem: whenever a player knows a course of action may be deadly, make it only close to lethal. Lower the attack...

Oddly, death seems to excite my current group of players. They all have backup characters which they have created and see death as an opportunity to play their alt.
Character creation in 4e IS pretty intensive, but it is also fun (at least for me). Who hasn't rolled up a character just to see what it would look like? With all the different classes, races, builds and themes, death is an opportunity!

I would have loved if they had stuck with the core material and just kept pumping out books in that vein, Wouldn't have complained if they had made a PHB4 or even if they had to reissue. They could have made an Errata compendium, and I still would have been cool with it, I suppose... I agree that at first level the character creation process is more time involved than at later levels, but then again the game seems to get a little easier once you hit a certain level (after the learning curve)...

      A crisis!
Somebody dies, somebody gets attacked, the bid bad returns. Whatever - the point is you need a situation where the whole party has to band together to win.

Modularity also adds another layer of complexity for the DM who has to decide which of the optional rules to use.
It also makes it much harder for the designers to create crunch since they have to take into account that the base rules may be different between new groups. Do they create options that work whatever subset of rules you're using, or do they leave it up to the DM to approve each ability added to a character? Unless player-end complexity is reduced massively the latter is...

Nice article. I especially like the suggestion of creating a tagged encounter well of sorts. To expand on that idea even more, how about a place for DMs to share encounters in a streamlined format. If you search for "wizard's tower" you get not only an official encounter, but dozens of player-made ones as well.
I will say I disagree and say that 4e has made prep-time shorter for me as a DM. The argument that previous editions had random encounter rules really doesn't fly with me, because...

    About Me

About Me: I've been hanging around the fringes of gaming culture for years before recently jumping in feet-first to DM my own 4e game.

So far, it's been great. The only downside is that being a grown-up means getting a game together can be tricky...

I like it, Dungeoneering! I am going to tell my players what you say. By the way, I just thought of a title for a deadly, trap infested, adventure, called "Tomb of Opportunities!"

Thanks for your comment, Dungeoneering. It may be that this "argument" is tired, but I've just recently come into 4e. My impressions are quite fresh at this point. ;)
