    A long time..

    Sunday, January 20, 2013, 11:56 PM

So, I haven't posted anything in awhile and I figured I'd go ahead and do a pre-Gatecrash deck update.

Since the last post, I've had a kid, and had to pick up fridays at work for a month, so I haven't really gotten a chance, much to my dismay, to play at FNM.  After Mirrodin rotated out, I was left saddened.  As a Goblin player, our lord rotated out, and alot of our good creatures/spells rotated out.  So I played a few other things before finally deciding to make another tempt at a gobby flavored deck, so let's have a look:

    Izzet Counterburn

    Creatures:

    4x Goblin Electromancer
    4x Guttersnipe
    4x Tandem Lookout
    3x Hellrider
    1x Talrand, Sky Summoner

    Spells:

    2x Talrand's Invocation
    1x Mizzium Mortars
    2x Negate
    2x Essence Scatter
    4x Searing Spear
    4x Krenko's Command
    4x Pillar of Flame
    2x Essence Backlash

    Lands:

    4x Sulfur Falls
    4x Steam Vents
    1x Desolate Lighthouse
    6x Mountain
    8x Island

The key to this deck is to get Electromancer/Gutter/Tandem Online.  Once you get them going, you can cast and grab card advantage to burn more.  Use token generators to get some blockers/attackers, and then get Hellrider online.  I've also considered using Burn at the Stake.

Of course, Skullcrack will come in with Gatecrash, and maybe a few other things, I haven't really looked at it, but I'm going to once the full spoiler releases.  But of course I have seen the new goblins, and now I'm frothing for a playset of Loyalists.  :D

Feel free to leave comments on the deck.

The Birth of the Goblin King.

    Sunday, June 24, 2012, 12:55 AM

I always await fridays with the biggest, herpiest-derpiest grin that I can muster.  Friday isn't just about the work week coming to a close.  Instead, it's about waiting for FNM time to come around.  To me, sitting down to play (win or lose) is always therapuetic in a way.  If I win, it seems to make the bad things in the week not seem so relevant, or if I lose, I can always walk outside and blow off some steam.

I play at a wicked shop in Decatur, Alabama know as the Comic Shop.  It's a very down to earth, friendly place to play Magic.  After I picked up playing again shortly after Dark Ascension, I settled in to play an FNM.  My expectations for the event weren't very high.  I had always known players who tended to be elitist pricks, and weren't very fun to play with.  I found out very quickly, however, that this new arena would be full of friendly players, who weren't afraid to show you the ropes.

After the event winded down, the 1 win to 3 loss record didn't taste to bad. I felt I had done pretty good considering I had whipped a whimsical deck together not 2 hours before the FNM started.

I got home and began to look through the boxes of cards me and my brother had just bought and started brainstorming.  I was never a fan of netdecking, it always seems distasteful to me to play something that wasn't a reflection of who I was and what I aimed to accomplish.  So as I am assorting through and color coding this mountain of cards, I noticed something that caught my eye..

    Goblin Arsonist

I knew from that point on, that I was going to build a goblin deck.  Now as I assembled all the Goblins I had, a few Tunnelers, Pikes, Arsonists, and a couple of spells (though I can barely even remember what the first draft of the deck looked like, I can assure you, it was awful).

So, the next FNM came to pass, and I left licking my wounds with a 0-4 record.  The night would not be a complete loss, as I was told about a few goblins that I hadn't seen yet from the previous block.  I quickly traded for a few of these goblins.  Now I had some power.  With Chieftains and Spikeshots, I felt empowered.  I felt as though I would reorganize the deck and destroy my foes.

So again, a deck revamp and another FNM... It was getting better.  It was almost there.  It would continue to prove 50/50 over the course of several FNMs.

So let's flash-forward to tonight.  I feel that the Goblins have now reached their final draft.  The draft that will take me to Top 4, and possibly the Win.

    Decklist:

    20x Mountains

    4x Memnite
    4x Goblin Arsonist
    4x Goblin Gaveleer
    4x Spikeshot Elder
    4x Goblin Wardriver
    4x Goblin Chieftain
    1x Chancellor of the Forge

    4x Goblin Grenade
    4x Arc Trail
    3x Kuldotha Rebirth
    2x Brimstone Volley
    2x Thunderous Wrath

After playtesting a couple of first moves, it seems like this is the Aggro that I am looking for.  I will let you know how it works out and post my results next week.
