So one of my resolutions this year was to watch more anime (my wife willing). I used to be a prolific consumer of all things drawn by asians whether static or moving. It started back when I was a wee laddie and I sat mesmerized by Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato). That was closely followed by the likes of Voltron (lions and cars), Battle of the Planets/G-Force (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), and Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z). After that, it was Robotech. Then suddenly such shows went off the air and nothing else really popped up.
Enter college. I started college right at the start of American anime distribution when there were few choices of what was commercially available. If anyone knows the name US Renditions then you know what I'm talking about. i paid $75 for that one VHS tape of GunBuster vol. 1 and I liked it! By my third year in college US anime distribution was in full swing and I was in hog heaven.
Fast forward. I left college, got busy with life, and just sort of stopped watching it. I caught the occasional series on Cartoon Network but never really consumed it with the passion or fervor I once did. There was a time I would passionately argue the whole sub vs. dub issue (I thought sub only was a snobby stance and still do), but now I would just roll my eyes and wave it off while muttering something like "kids..." under my breath. God, have I gotten that old?
I have kept up with some series during the years. I got the whole series of Trigun and Last Exile. Outlaw Star, Magic Users Club and Escaflowne were a few other series I followed.
Setting up my home theater PC got me into the mood to get more anime and start watching it again. I have started trawling Half-Price Books and other places that sell used videos for good bargains on used anime. I have actually picked up a decent amount that I need to find time to sit and watch. Alas, a wife that doesnt' like it and an 11-month old that isn't old enough to watch it doesn't make it easy. It's taken me two weeks to watch 4 episodes of Season 1 of Fullmetal Alchemist.
The interesting thing is, as much as there's a lot of new stuff coming out, I find myself trying to find old favorites, or series that I would have watched at the time they were released if I had been paying attention. Much of these series are out of print and I have to hunt down copies of them. Like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Fist of the North Star, Street Fighter II V, the various Gundam incarnations, etc. Some of these DVDs are sold for outrageous prices by sellers.
It's not all old stuff though. I have happily watched the first season of Bleach and am making my way through Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Naruto is a favorite (although I will admit that I have watched fan subs all the way through episode 180 or some such).
