I have played every edition of D&D. Every one. Some I liked more than others but I liked them all.
We don't need D&D next.
If you like 1st edition then play 1st edition, if you like 3rd then play 3rd, simple.
Wizards need to realise that by trying to please all of the people all of the time they are going to crash and burn.
Why not just provide more support for the older editions and make money that way instead of creating a whole new edition?

I was in much the same kind of opinion when the announced D&D Next... 4e was pretty damn perfect for me, it was easy to run, easy to introduce people to, and lots of fun. I still had my BECMI era Rules Cyclopedia if I wanted a more classic gaming fix, and the last time I tried that, I missed my minis and superheroic combats...
However...
I'm lucky enough to have been allowed to run the D&D Next playtest in the UK at the last tweetup in february. I can't say much due to the NDA's, but I was stunned by the effort that has gone into the current playtest iteration, which is an impressively coherent and fairly feature rich rules set that embraces ideas from every edition and ties them together well. Its fast and fun.
My advice it to give WotC a chance to show off the ruleset and the modules, and explain to the D&D community how they feel these modules will allow people to play a game that is similar to the older editions, while having the beneift of nearly 40 years of game design improvements.

I agree, we don't need D&D Next. But WotC is a business, so they probably see things differently. I'm sure there are lots of people that will want it.
I'm still going to be running 4E after Next comes out that's for certain. Not sure whether I'll get to continue playing it though

I've managed to download it now and had a quick read over the rules and had a look at the character sheets.
It certainly makes me appreciate 4e just now.

Well that's the end of any playtesting for me. My group just don't want any more to do with it and are content to wait and see the final product. Our playtesting sessions have not been good. I have been a DM since 1982 and have enjoyed all editions except for 3rd which ended our D&D nights for several years until with much excitement 4e was launched.
I recruited 2 new players in to the group who have played nothing but 4e and one playtest session was enough for them. not impressed was the reaction.
I had more hope for the old hard core players from old. Not impressed was the reaction but they did give it a second chance. Not a third chance though.
I really tried to bring to the playtest all of what I remembered was good about 1st and 2nd edition to but I couldn't get the feel for it. Maybe because i'm not 12 anymore. I'm 42 now and my gaming group's youngest player is 28.
I think when the support ends for 4e it will be the beginning of the end for our group as it was when 3rd launched.
To that end instead of getting ready to invest heavily in all products 5e i'm going to by myself an Alienware pc and spend my time online, just like all the MMO's filled my time before 4e launched.
