Was talking to one of the other local DMs last night via IM and we were discussing what makes a good level 5 adventure, as this is the level that we both have trouble building adventures for.
The scenario we were considering is below:
You have five players who all like to maxmise their characters potential (key class score is 18 base + any race modifiers). Party consists of two strikers, 1 defender, 1 controller and 1 leader
Each character has access to level 6 magic weapon weapon and a non weapon magic item of level 5 and any ordinary equipment that they may wish to have purchased using say 500gp.
You are planning a series of linked encounters/challenges that will take a day to play.
All the players are experienced, so you are probably looking at between 6 or 7 encounters/challenges over the course of the day including some character/NPC interaction which ends with them going up to level 6 or very close to it.
Bearing this in mind I'd appreciate anyones opinion on how to cater for this level (if a DM) or what you would expect (if a player).
I try to avoid a pre-published adventures as my group have either found these far too easy, too difficult based on the suggested levels or own them and know what is coming...
Cheers Matt

Tough question if your ignoring pre-published completely.
How about taking something pre-published and re-skinning it. -Take a Scales of War or a couple of Chaos Scar adventures and change the locations to meet your available maps/tiles. -Take the monsters and either completely re-do them or just change the descriptions of their looks and effects. Suddenly the tenticle monster with reach becomes a chain weilding baddie with reach instead. Mechanics stay the same but the description and the encounter changes. -Try adding some area effects. You can even theme the whole adventure around them. A delve into a crystal filled dungeon would make a nice description but if there were different crystals in different caves which each had different effects then that becomes memorable. A cave filled with red crystals adds 1D6 to all powers with the fire keyword and makes players loose a healing surge due to the heat? A cave filled with pale blue crystals that has ice covering the floor making it difficult terrain? You get the idea...

Thanks for that. Have tried the redo for Scales and merge with Chaos Scar, but since the group as a whole have already completed the whole SoW campaign it is hard to make it so they don't spot what is happening,.
Really like the area effects idea especially the caves idea - as I currently have the party climbing a mountain to face off with an Ice Dragon - as it would give them something to do whilst climbing the mountain other than jumping lava rivers (yes I had been watching LotR when I was writing this adventure!)
