I'm a dad of three. My oldest girls (4 and 2 1/2) and my wife and I have been playing around with a very basic (read: unofficial) version of kiddungeonadventure. The kids love it. We build a maze with their blocks, people it with "vicious beasts" from the toychest and then they lead a character from one end to the other--usually to rescue another stuffed animal.
I am completely new to DnD. I never played as a kid (one of those families) and so I'm really making it up as I go. This is harder than I thought. Any ideas for helping me get better as a junior DM and for developing the game to help my youngsters stay engaged?

if your oldest is four, then it sounds to me like your current game style is perfect. I bet they have a ball. I'm going to try something like that with my youngest (almost 3), who has been asking to play dungeons and dragons like his brothers (12 & almost 8) and sister (10).
I'd guess that playing the game using versions of their favorite characters might engage them. My youngest is hooked on Marvel Super Hero Squad, so I'll probably use that.

Hi folks - due to work commitments not been on here as much as i should have been over last few months ! (Sorry)
I love the way you are running the game. It sounds perfect. I run a game with my 8yr old daughter where she plays Cheeky Monkey the Ranger. She normal fights against evil fairies using magic banana bombs and coconut club ! Whatever the kids like - go for it. There is nothing wrong with how you run a game at thier age as long as you and they are enjoying it.
