Hi,

i am from Germany, and we had three D&D sessions with our kids. They arte 8 and 5 years old.

I choose a story where Goblins drive off rats from the ruins of a fort.

I made 4(Sentinel, Wizard, Fighter, Thief) level one characters and scaled the down to 1/3 of the power (Age of 8 years).

The first skill challenges/fights where against some rats, until they discovered that these rats
are normally located at the ruins. So they made their ways to the ruins and drive off those Goblins. The rats can now return.

We had a lot of fun. Both kids where driving the story. We used non-bloody speech in the fights.
The enemys just lost and every does not make wounds, but reduce the stamina....

The last event we got a 4th player with us. We played together for more than 3 hours without having someone lost on the track.

Fabulous!  How did the 5 yo do?  The third of my 4 children is 4 yo and wants to play but I've been holding off till she can read a bit.   She still has another year of preschool before she starts Kindergarden (christmas birthday), but she is already writing names of everyone in the house.

Thanks,

TjD

It sounds like you had a great success there with the kids and it also sounds like you had a lot of fun too ! My usual opener for kids is a search in some tunnels dug by giant insects under an old ladies house - usually gets plenty of laughs from the kids as i describe the 'creepy crawly bugs'.

My five year old son followed the story while waiting for his times to throw the dice!

We started the new Adventure yesterday, and he remembered, that there was a goblin left forest.

I try the level-0 adventure from the dungeon now. (Something with Weeping....)

I scaled the characters up to 3/4th of the level 1 power.

Concluding I would next time take normal level 1 essential characters.

Perhaps, I'll take your idea instead of the weeping godess. I am not sure that skeletons are the right now for my 5 year old child.

Friend of mine played with his kids. They have a concentration time of about 1 hour. In autumn we will have a joined game.

And we helped our 5 year old child calculating!

As they are native germans we translate their powers!

Feel free to use the idea as much as you want. Ive also found that converting fairy stories also works really well. Kids can relate to them and love playing the part of Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel etc.
