Last weekend we finally got around to starting the red box adventure "The Twisting Halls". This was my daughters 2nd outing as DM and she was very excited.

After we played through the players "Read this first" book we dived straight into the game proper with an encounter in a group of rooms with 2 Goblin Blackblades(?), 1 Goblin Hexer(?) and 1 Rage Drake(?)  (I'm banned from even touching the books so much of this is guess work). As we entered the chamber we saw a human male closing a door to the north and one goblin yelled a warning and moved to attack while the second moved to open a side door and released the Drake.

I was quite suprised by the amount of damage caused to the PCs in this encounter. All 4 party members were bloodied at least once and the combination of the hexers blinding de-buff and the blackblades CA and drake damage output made for an exciting encounter that both children really got into.

After this we decided to give chase to the human we saw when we entered so we continued through the northern door and met a rather pedestrian encounter with a couple of dire rats and goblin cutters armed with bows and other than a concealed pit trap proved to be quite easy.

It was the next encounter that proved our downfall.

Turning west we opened a door to find our selves face to face with a Young White Dragon and my daughter informed us that this was a skill challenge which, to cut a long story short, we failed and the Dragon attacked.

It won second place in the initiative. The fighter opened with his power strike and an action point MBA. The the dragon then claw attacked both the cleric and fighter and used an action point to unleashed it's breath weapon and critted the wizard. At this point all 3 of the characters were bloodied badly so things were looking bad. The cleric healed the wizard and used second wind then used her AP to attack and give out some much needed THPs. The rogue then pushed the dragon back a square and moved into a flanking position and also used his AP and critted but this provoked the dragon tail slap. The partys wizard now used the daily to lay down a zone of fire.

The second round started with the whole party still bloodied and all action points used. The dwarf fighter used his second wind and attacked, but this bloodied the dragon and it immediately used its breath weapon again and the following double claw attack dropped both the cleric and fighter into negative HP.

At this point the battle was a forgone conclusion, and my daughter became quite upset about having killed off the entire party so I called for a break and sat her down and explained that she didn't HAVE to kill every one, and if she thought about it she could infact use this to further the story of her game. So in true D&D cliche style the party now has a white dragon nemesis who they have to call master and who demands half of all their treasure!!

We were unable to continue the game after this but - WOW.

It was a great session with lots of RP, a skill challenge and two good combats that were delivered by a 10 year old.

It always impresses me how young some kids are when they start DM'ing. It goes to show how easy the core rules are, and how much more open and inventive kids are when it comes to roleplay and story. If it had been me, ya'll would have been dead. I would have hated to do it, but ya'll would still be creating new char's. Quite frankly I like her solution much better and I'm jealous that I wouldn't have thought of it.
