It finally happened so I thought I'd share.

Yesterday I had the finest D&D experience I have ever had. My 10 year old daughter got behind the DM screen.

It has been a couple weeks in the making. In the last couple of days she has had lots of questions about monster stat blocks, how she should handle this or that situation etc etc but she managed to design and run a six encounter delve for 5 1st level chars.

Her first D&D experience was 2 years ago when I took them through  Kobold Hall in the back of the DMG. This was her inspiration for her  first DM session, but with her own twist. The BBEG was a young white  dragon, but she had two opposing forces of goblins and kobolds each  trying to prove they love it more!!!

The party roster was
  • Goliath Earth Warden (played by me),
  • Dragonborn Dragon Sorcerer (played by my son),
  • Human Laser Cleric (played by my wife)
  • Halfling AD Rogue (also played by me) and a
  • Deva Orbizard (that she controled)

As to be expected her narration and description were a little nervous a first but she quickly got into her stride. She included difficult terrain, skills, puzzles and a small sub-plot, a kobold wanting to get out (a la Splug).

All things considered she did really well and right now I am the happiest father in the world and I can't wait for her next outing as DM.Laughing

Ps. She also cleared up a disagreement that has appeared several times on these boards. According to her Drow MUST be pronounced as in cow NOT blow.Surprised

Sweet, and congrats!

I know the pride you're feeling.  My 11-year-old started running a custom adventure she wrote this week too.  She did well on the narration elements but was a little hazy on determining rolls needed for ad-hoc skills challenges.  I had to help her stat up a new monster, and I hope she gets the hang of that soon, because she absolutely hates the idea of using someone else's monsters.

How fantastic!

Very cool that she included skills and puzzles! When the kids in my daughters' group make up a scenario that rarely happens, even though they seem to get the most enjoyment out of scenarios that use their best skills.

Thanks guys. I was going to upload some pics I took while my daughter was running the session but my wife wasn't happy so I was over ruled. Embarassed

The thing she found most difficult was wading though all my D&D books to find out what she wanted to know, so I've decided to get my budding DM the new Red Box when it comes out. I think it will make her life much easier and allow her the freedom to create her own campaign without having to go to me everytime she doesn't understand something.

And I'll no longer feel the need to be a back seat DM.Sealed
