I am interested in attending some Living Forgotten Realms organized play games at one of the nearby stores with my 8 year old son but my wife and I have reservations having my child playing with a bunch of 20-40 year old gamers (even if I attend and play). At the moment, I am not sure how or if I should proceed. Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas?

I'd recommend going once by yourself, to check it out if you're not certain about the group. That way you can see if the people are ones you'd want your son around, or even find that its better and there are other kids there your son's age.
I bring my 4 year old daughter with me to D&D Encounters sometimes (not to play, but just to watch), but I didn't do it until after a few sessions, when I realized that most of the other guys there were parents as well with similar age children.
Also at the D&D Encounters for us, there are at least a couple of kids that can't be much older then 12 that participate. But not all stores are equal, so again I'd say scope it out yourself first.

I figure I might bring my eldest son along (7) at some point. There's some older teenagers at the D&D Encounters near me, so sometimes the topic can drift to an inappropriate territory for a 7 year old, but at the same time, its mostly in the form of double-entendres - so it is unlikely my son would pick up on anything specific from it.
At this point, my son still has school, so he wouldn't be getting home until well past his bedtime - so it isn't even an issue for me to worry about right now.

I would agree with the idea to know the group before you invite your little ones. I have been taking my little ones to Gen Con once they reach 9 and it has gone very well. They play in the LFR, DnD Championship, Traveller, Star Wars, and Serenity games and have only had a slight problem with a group once in 5 years. Even with that group, once they realized my 9 year old knew every monster in the manual and the rules better than they did, it worked out okay. As you stated above, most inappropiate comments tend to fly right over their heads. The DnD Encounters work the same way, and my 15 year old (boy do I feel old) even DM's some weeks.

I echo the comments that you should check out the group first. Also talk to the group organizer beforehand to see if it is something they think will work for that group. When I get a chance to play these days I go to a great group that welcomes kids of all ages. Several of the DMs are parents and we know how to handle the adventure so it is fun, challenging but still kid friendly. I think most groups would be like that but I admit I have seen one or two that aren't too kid friendly at all.
Like we all said, scope it out first and you should be fine.

I asked my local gaming store if it was alright to bring along my 2 son 12 and 10 to watch, and he told me to get them ready to play !!! LOL, run them through a few adventures and lets get them going. I will sit in as an observer too, by myself, kids at home, to see the groups playing style and verbal table talk.
Back in the day i used to buy modules, then I made up my own quests and adventures. I just started 4 edtion Essentials Red Box with my boys, and I purchased Dungeon Masters Kit that contained a two part adventure. So if i wanted to purchase any 4e adventure would it or does it work with 4e Essentials. Or do i just use my magic to make it work. And also is 4th Edition books differant from 4th Edition Essentials.
Just want to know if its apples to pears differant rules and playing style or more like Granny Smith to Fuji, can it be cross played.
hate to waste money on 4e stuff if its not 4e Essentials compatable.

As far as I am aware 4e and Essentials are totally compatible, the Essentials line just makes for more streamlined characters aimed at newer players so that they dont get swamped by the huge array of power choices and get brin frazzled and give up on the game.
The earlier 4e adventures (Keep on the Shadowfell, Thunderspire Labyrinth etc) should run ok with Essentials PC's and the monsters involved (while taken from MM1/2) will have slightly different stat blocks to their compatriots in the Essentials Monster Vault (and the new MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale).
Although the players in my campaign are currently restricted to PHB1/2, the game I take part in as a player allows PHB1/2 + Essentials, our party consists of :-
Elven Rogue (PHB - my teenage daughters pc) Half Orc Barbarian (PHB) Half Orc Cleric (PHB) Eladrin Mage (PHB) Dragonborn Cavalier (Ess - my pc) Goliath Warpriest of Raven Queen (PHB/Ess - also mine)
So far we have had no compatibility issues and our DM uses a mixture of MM1/Red box monsters on us.
"Well that encounter was easy....er, guys, why is the DM grinning?" (party members last words) It's not a party till the screaming starts!

Thank You for the information, I think I have now purchased all the the essential products except fot the tile sets. Waiting for next weeks paycheck for them. Glad that what I am hearing from people is that 4e and 4e Essential are not total different versions, as in using older adventures.
And for what I am seeing I better get those tiles soon too, I noticed what the older sets go for on ebay and amazon. Some must have been printed on gold LOL $74+ for just 1 Tile Set hmmm think it was DU2 Streets of Shadow, other in mid 20's-35's most still at 15.00 range.
Supply and Demand still rules the world I guess.
So far my kids are really having fun, I am having them first make one type of character of their choice, playing a few encounters then asked them to make a different class character to see the difference in style of playing.
When I fist started playing back in the day, when we learned the healing power of clerics, always someone in the party needed to be one if not two people LOL. And when I played DnDO my online character where Clerics too, old habit I guess. So when my oldest first wanted to make his first character he said something to the fact of, "better role a cleric " But I see using the DnDinsider more classes have healing roles too now adays.
DnD was a big part of my life growing up, and I am glad 31+ years after I started to play, I see my boys are starting to bring it into their world of enjoyment.
As always I am glad DnD is being used as a bond between parent and child. I mean how cool is it when you kids come home and they ask "say dad do you think we could squeeze in some DnD tonight? Well do you?" LOL and I make time ...

I started going to Encounters with my oldest 2 kids, 8(son) and 11(daughter) at the time (9 and 12 now) durning the last chapter of the Phantom Brigade season. They love it and are always looking forward to Wednesday nights. We played all through the Dark Legacy of Evard and are now starting in on the Neverwinter season. They were the only kids at the table, but always welcomed where we played. This season that just started look absolutely awesome. To make it more awesome the # of players where we play jumped after game day. We would usually be at 6 or 7 players and a DM - not enough to split to two table. The organizers planned for some growth, but we had 15 players and 2 DM's for the first encounter- very exciting. Had a mother/daughter (girl was probably around 9). Had all the kids at the same table with one brand spanking new player and a couple of other experienced players, myself, and the mother. DM was fabulous! My oldest was playing the only leader at the table and did great. She opened combat giving a bunch of use 5 temps, then most of us lost them when the halfing assassin turned into a fireball (devil's pawn), but he took out 5 minions. The synergy of their play was great with her buffing everyone so that he could take out all the bad guys without hurting the rest of us. Fantastic team work. My son was improving a character background where his shifter ranger(scout) was imprisoned but escaped. He also had the best single round, single enemy damage of the night when he charged, used power strike and hit with dual weapon attack - knock the enemy prone and did 25 damage. I love it when they are awesome. 4e is great at letting all players and their characters do awesome things. Encounters is great for kids because the single encounter is good for attentions spans and bedtimes and the get exposed to different play styles and can even try out different character each week if the want. I love that my kids love playing. Next week they will be 400 miles away at their grandparents and I asked my little brother to take them to Encounters there because they don't want to miss a week. I even made a character for him so he can play too if he wants (he usually only plays 3.5). TjD
