Hello all,

What specific problem-solving scenarios and/or skill challenges have your kids enjoyed the most?

Our group of 7 and 8 years olds particularly enjoyed figuring out how to get across a cave room with a lava pit floor that had a broken bridge across it. (They started by hilariously trying to cross by lassoing a stalactite in the ceiling; it took several minutes after I said "hmm, do you really think that would work" for them to figure out it was a bad idea.) So many possibilities--wall climb around the edge, use a cold breath weapon, lasso the statue on the other side of the bridge, try to jump (better have a backup plan lol!) etc. I'd also given them a riddle brazenly copied from Indiana Jones (the "leap of faith" thing)--when one of them fell they finally figured that one out when I asked them to go back to the riddle.

Anyways, my daughter's group loves these sorts of scenarious more than combat but neither they nor I are all that great at thinking them up. If folks here want to share ideas it would be fantastic!

I ran my daughter and my friend through a challenge that she seemed to enjoy. They were in a town square looking at stalls to see if there was anything they needed before heading out. Strange things kept happening, such as items appearing in their packs (leading to accusations of theft), and displays crashing over. Just as they were wondering about this, two animals started stampeding, pulling their carts behind them. The animals raced around the square, endangering themselves and the townsfolk. The PCs had to get the animals under control, possibly by dealing with the invisible gnomes that were riding and spurring the animals. My daughter, an elf wizard, thought to use ray of frost on a puddle to slow the animals down and I had her make an Arcana check. I think she got a kick out of that.

The gnomes escaped into a sewer grate and we stopped shortly after that, but perhaps this is an idea you or others can use.
