My name is also Mark. I'm one of a dying breed, a UK gamer!! I run a D&D game for my son, 6, and my 9 year old daughter. They have basicly grown up with D&D as I have also DMed for an adult game since 2e. The current party roster is a Deva Avenger played by my daughter, Minotaur Barbarian played by my son, my wife has an eladrin wizard and I (for my sins) run 2 DMPCs a dwarf fighter and a human laser cleric. Our game has been going for about a year but only weekends when we can fit it in around my work, homework etc.

Don't worry Mark, you're not alone in the UK; every year there are more children than the year before at the main residential convention I attend. www.conceptionuk.org And I'm due to attempt to kick off our first on-going campaign with my three eldest (10,7,5) tomorrow.

Here's another. Mine are a bit young (6,4,1) to be playing in the evenings and I have a reluctant wife who feels that the game comes under the heading of 'weird and antisocial'. They are allowed to watch and play Ben10 games though. Tell me the difference if you can!
I'm in Doncaster, so if any dads are struggling to find a game in the SYorks area, there are spaces at my table!

Dear God! I meet these people too and can't understand them. Weird and anti-social! The only game that lets people construct a story that allows them to be heroes! A game that allows them to try on different personaes in a very social setting. This is the best game in the world. Yes, you fight and kill things, but you're fighting monsters that threaten the foundation of the society of the story your telling. You're learning a very real social skill: social interation within a group. Let's face it, most of us geeks lack social skills because the world we live in is the world inside our heads. D&D allows us to take that world and interact with it AND others, (granted they're geeks too) but intelligence is soothing. Tell your wife that a gamer mom plays with her girls and finds it fascinating and insightful to see the characters they choose to play and the manner in which they choose to play them. I also think that the D&D experience lets people blow off some steam. One of my players came in and everyone started to chit-chat and she said, "We need to get started because I need to kill something." I said, rolling 2 die, "Ok, your group is surprised. Who's #6, you just got hit for 1d? damage, the party is under attack." 6hrs of play later she was in a good mood. She'd had a bad week, boyfriend dumped her, lost her senior ring, didn't get into driver's ed etc. She just wanted to kill something and the game let her. Weird and antisocial, I THINK NOT. Fun, insightful, creative, interactive, silly, and fantastic, it's every bit that and more.
