A lot of summon spells were crap, but the later ones with special behavior when the creatures weren't controlled were nice IMO, it's just like a friendly NPC from a DM point of view (or a dominated friendly NPC when the summon is a demon or devil).

Invoker angels and shaman spirit-slave (okay, I think that shaman enslaving spirits is a nonsense) are nice, but not from a summon focused person. I like summoning class, and D&D never offered a true one.
When you really want to play a summoner (or a pet class), you are ready to play the summoned creatures, even if you play them more than the base character in combat.

Personnally, I would like to have no spell at all, and obtain every effects from summoned creatures.
"They are making it clear that when modern design and common sense come into conflict with tradition, tradition wins." - thecasualoblivion
"Vancian isn't broken, you just have to set your game to the wizard's clock!" - Oxybe
"In many ways, making a new edition of D&D is alot like trying to sell a car to the Amish." - Dwarfslayer
"Encounters are the heart of the AD&D game" - PHB AD&D 2nd edition.
"you shouldn't even bother trying to become like me." - Gary Gygax (Elfcrusher confirmed)

"Feel free to claim I said anything you like. How's someone going to call you out on it? Are they going to be all like, 'I know all of the things that Gary said, and that's not one of them?'"

A option could be concentration check to controll the summoned creature... but if it is animal Int, or a concentration check to give a order to a sentient creature like a celestial champion.

Other idea is the "pet" class. When a summoned creature kills a enemy... the XPs rewards aren´t for the PCs but for the "pet class" like it was a extra PCs. Spending XPs like crafting magic item in the 3rd Edition the PCs can get improved familiars, animal companions, better skill to summoning magic, paladin´s mounts, the magic pets...

About summoned monsters I would mention the subgenre of magic pets, like Pokemon, Digimon, Huntik: Secrets & Seekers, Invizimals, Bakugan, Monsuno, monster rancher or Medabots where main characters can train or summon a monster or special creature to fight creatures controlled or guided by other humans.

WotC could a module about it, and if cards are played suitable, if Wotc do it well, it could be a great sucess.

Can you imagine the D&D version of Dragon drive or Legednz?

What is your opinion about pathfinder summoner?

I would like a module about a "magic pet" with monster levels like "Savage Species" with customizable monster traits for leveling up.
