The requirement to actually deal damage was made because it is logical and makes sense.
No more coup de grace with an attack the creature is 100% immune to. 99.999995 of the time there is no difference. But for those rare corner cases, it seems logical that the creature should have to take damage for you to kill it.
Makes complete sense here. You have to be able to hurt the person in order to coup de grace them.
Or are you going to stab it with a feather?
Now this brings up an interesting question. Are we assuming that you can deal fatal damage to them. What if you only stomp them with your foot? That might take a couple turns to deal enough damage to kill them? Am I getting to pedantic here?
I do think that it ought to be easier than just advantage to hit it. After all - you would have advantage if it was prone and fully defending itself. One approach would be to ignore dex bonuses - but that requires figuring out the bonus, etc. It is probably easier to just impose a flat penalty for being helpless "attack with a +2 and advantage" or some such.
I guess the issue would be complicating the interaction. But you do bring up a good point. It should be easier to hit a defenseless, unconcsious person than it is to hit a prone defender.
I'm also intrigued by the possibility of a 'take 10' rule. I.e. - if you are attacking an unconscious target, you can 'take 10' on the attack. You attack with advantage and if both rolls are lower than a 10, the highest die is treated as if you rolled a 10. It means you will almost always hit, except on something that is really really hard to hit (in which case a miss might be appropriate).
Interesting. That could work. Possibly eliminating the need to worry about removing the AC bonus, too.

It should be an automatic hit. The damage roll should be a normal roll. This gives allies a chance to save the fallen character.

Can you explain how a damage roll gives the players a chance to save a fallen character? Or do you mean there should be no automatically killing of a character?

No automatically killing a monster or character. It should just be an automatic hit -- then a regular damage roll.
