Lately I have been reading my D&D material that I have accumulated over the years. THis includes TSR era D&DN and it has been a few years and I have forgoteen the specifics of various things.

Somehting very similar to the advantage system turn up in Skills and Powers from 1995. If you had high ability scores you could roll 2-3 d20 and keep the best result for a check. Anyway yesterday we started a new 2nd ed campaign and one of the PCs ended up with a wildmage. We had a quick check of the wild mage spells and found Unluck a 4th level wild mage spell from 1991 from the Tome of Magic  book.

"The victim rolls twice for attacks, damages, saving throws, etc always using the worse dice roll" save negates and the duration is 2d10 rounds.

I just thought it wa funny finding a "new" mechanic in a 22 year old spell description.  One could get drunk, read the Tome of Magic and design a new RPG mechanic around a spell description.
Reducing a character to a list of dice rolls and modifiers is not role playing*

Given the sheer number of spells (and/or powers) published for D&D over its relatively long history, you're almost certainly right.

I'm sure something about "monkeys" and "typewriters" would be an apt observation.

Yes, I am expressing my opinions (even complaints - le gasp!) about the current iteration of the play-test that we actually have in front of us.

No, I'm not going to wait for you to tell me when it's okay to start expressing my concerns (unless you are WotC).

(And no, my comments on this forum are not of the same tone or quality as my actual survey feedback.)

This was put into the advanced player's book for pathfinder as well.  The witch class gets a hex, "fortune", that imparts advantage and "evil eye" that imposes disadvantage.  They are both at-will abilities (with a once-per-target-per-day limitation) that are really effective.  Well built class generally, lots of fun stuff... maybe a touch too potent at first glance, but their spell list is limited.

3.5 and 4e also both had elements that granted double rolls with use the better/worse of the two. The idea has always been something that's present in D&D. Next's big flagpole thing is attempting to promote the mechanic as a primary way in which bonuses and penalties to rolls are expressed, more than the idea in the abstract.
Dwarves invented beer so they could toast to their axes. Dwarves invented axes to kill people and take their beer.

Swanmay Syndrome: Despite the percentages given in the Monster Manual, in reality 100% of groups of swans contain a Swanmay, because otherwise the DM would not have put any swans in the game.
