Probably it has never been done right and it is still a TTRPG played online as opposed to a PC/Console RPG where you do not actualy have to roleplay just follow and influence a railroaded story (not that is a bad thing I like some PC/console RPGs).
Still doesn't really solve the time issue. You are basically paying someone else to do your designing for you with games like Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, WoW etc. They are really a different genre even if they share the RPG label. They have gone mainstream, D&D has not.
