I think the problem goes like this: players that don't like something about the new edition come to the forums to complain about it, using hostility, in the hopes that the majority of the fans will agree with them. When the majority don't those fans get more hostile. Those of us who really like the game spend a little time explaining what we really like about it. A lot of people agree. Those who don't like it still cry foul. An impasse is reached. Since those of us who like the game have something we like, we retreat to play test and quite down until the next packet. Those who are upset have an axe to grind, so they stick around and complain. The forums feel more and more hostile and more and more disillusioned because those of us who are not don't have as much of a reason to stick around... until the next packet rolls out. Then the pattern repeats itself. It has just been a long time since the last packet, so the hostility is currently at an all time high.

That said, I still think the game is heading in the right direction. It is looking great. It is not there yet… but I think, based on what I have seen so far, that it will get there.

Given that the worst "problems" come from a handful of posters (maybe two handfuls, at best), having "not everyone" cooperate really won't ever be enough.

Yeah, I agree. There is about two handfuls out of three on these boards that attack anything said in a negative light. Regardless of whether its constructive criticism filled with facts and examples. I say we just start hitting the report button like crazy. Here are some examples that you can use to decide when to hit the report button:

"Please quote where I said that"

"We'll see when 5E tanks"

"X + Y = Z so you are factually wrong" (you can replace the xyz part with any math or logic equation)

There are many others, if anyone wants more examples feel free to PM me. I've got an email box full of them...

I feel mainly that people get offended too easily. Like when I post a math equation that shows how something doesn't work the way it was intended, and then people rant about how I'm trying to not be inclusive or whatever. There is a such thing as 'constructive criticism'. It goes in the form of "here is where you are wrong, here is why, and here is how you can fix it.". Many, many people get offended when they see constructive criticism...Smile

I agree with this entirely...except I'm inclined to stay till the next packet.

Can I respond with hostility when Englishlanguage uses words that are not in the English language?  He is asking to egt hostility.

Just kidding.

What I really get annoyed with is the near ban on edition warring.  What's so terrible about edition warring?  I sometimes even find those threads fascinating and informative - no kidding!

I know that some say edition wars kill players, and that kills D&D, but come on...outside of the internet, when two people cross each others' paths and they both prefer different editions, very seldom does it ever elevate to anything resembling a "war". Usually, it comes down to, "Nah, I play edition X. Never really got into the one you're talking about.", and that's about it.

The internet provides that anonymity needed for true insult-flinging. Quite frankly, if someone came up to me and said 1/2 of the stuff that gets passed around on these boards every day, it would, no doubt, end in a physical confrontation. Fortunately, though, you can't e-punch someone...yet.

The 2 core goals of DDN:
1. Create a version of D&D that embraces the enduring, core elements of the game.
2. Create a set of rules that allows a smooth transition from a simple game to a complex one.

Ugh.  "Edition wars".  My worst moment with them?  When my brother-in-law asked how I was liking the new edition, and my wife's cousin launched into a rant that was essentially word-for-word the standard "edition war" fare.

If there's one person I'd expect to bring the worst of the internet into "real life" though, it'd be him, so... no real surprise.

I don't remember what we're talking about.

Yes, I am expressing my opinions (even complaints - le gasp!) about the current iteration of the play-test that we actually have in front of us.

No, I'm not going to wait for you to tell me when it's okay to start expressing my concerns (unless you are WotC).

(And no, my comments on this forum are not of the same tone or quality as my actual survey feedback.)

there's absolutely no tolerance for people who have a more closed view

If those people want their view to be The One Way, and force that closure on the rest of us, then they shouldn't be tolerated.

And many of them do actually want that.  There's a difference between saying "I want to make sure D&DN works for me" and "I want nothing that doesn't work for me in D&DN."  The former are who we want involved in the process, and the latter aren't.

There are people on all sides of the edition wars in each category, for the record.  And all of them in the latter category are toxic to this forum and to D&DN in general.

Heyyy... the whole point was that the closed view was a byproduct of limited exposure to the broader community. If our reception here was more nurturing to the gaming culture we claim to want, we'd have far more success in inspiring others to bring that cultural approach to their own games, which benefits both the hobby and the allied gaming masses.

As an aside, all opinions and viewpoints are valid, and all opinions and viewpoints are a part of the process whether any individual desires them to be or not. The only toxic quality in the opinion/viewpoint consideration is the way we manage them.

It's silly that a game about fighting a dragon with a stick that can shoot lightning while wearing a polka dotted robe is taking so seriously.
