You can't. Because it's human nature to band together with like minded people where you can point and laugh at others for not being 'like you'. Edition Wars are here to stay because they are each their own little camps against the 'heathens' that don't think like you.
Actually, the edition wars are here to stay because it's impossible to reconcile 4th and pre-4th.
The edition wars predate 4e. The term was coined when 3e was released and between the OSR and 3e, the gulf was wide. The internet simply wasn't as well-inhabited at the time. Heck, I remember watching the .5 edition wars between people who swore by 3.0 and those who moved on (or began with) 3.5.
Change breeds controversy.
Yes, the anti-3rd edition faction was pretty violent. Nothing new except for the target.
Those of you who think 4th caused edition wars, I present to you the website dragonsfoot. Watch second editioners hate on 3rd edition.
For that matter Gygax himself had little nice to say about 3rd edition (although he was fairly diplomatic about it), I can remember him even referring to it as gasp superheroic. Its almost as if all the same arguments get rehased with each new edition.

What? who did that?
Not me that's for sure
Good, then there is no need to examine and judge the differences between the editions and judge them in comparison to others because it doesn't matter. Right?
Oh! I wan't JUDGING the differences between editions. (after all, what is good for me might suck for the next guy)
I was merely pointing at them, saying that they exist.
(for the record, I think there is a LOAD of things that 4e did very well, changes that made the game much better. 3e brought a much needed overhaul of the backward-facing maths... but neither of these editions were "perfect" in any way... nor were the previous 2 either)

Did the play style change from AD&D to 3rd edition? Certainly, it had too. The change was not as drastic. 3rd edition also did not make a habit of arbitrarily changing lore, so ontop of different game play one had to deal with arbitrary changes to lore.
My group had the biggest change in play style from 1e to 3e. We stopped playing. We didn't like all of the changes. The change in play style from 1e to 4e was pretty minimal. The more streamlined nature of 4e (compared to 3e) allowed us to play our games much more like 1e than we experienced with 3e.

Hey guys,
I've taken a look and decided this thread is going to stay closed. It has gone way off topic (should Wizards publish new content for old editions) and become pretty much all edition warring.
Just keep in mind that comparing editions really isn't a correct topic for this forum in any case.
Thanks,
Monica
