Recently, James described hippogriffs and griffons in his Wandering Monsters article. Jon has chosen to tackle the elusive hybrid of hippogriff and griffon, called the hippogriffon, in his. (No, not really. He's sticking to the hippogriff.) Visually, what do you want in a hippogriff? Jon asks you to think about this and provide feedback in this week’s column. Honestly, for me, the best hippogriff I have ever seen is that 3E one (the one on the far right of the images in this article).
And I'm an old school 1E/2E guy, so that's not nostalgia talking - that 3E Monster Manual image of a hippogriff is just plain spot on in my opinion.

Honestly, I think the 3.5 art for the Hippogriff is just about perfect. You could mess around with the coloration, and that would be fine, but as far as anatomical concerns, it just plain wins. I think the reason that it works so well is that it actually looks like its own creature rather than just a bunch of creatures slapped together, which tends to look silly even if it does follow the more classic mythological descriptions. It looks like something that could believably be simplistically described as a cross between an eagle and a horse, yet it still look like a realistic animal that could theoretically exist. This of this as similar to how the popular incarnation of the Minotaur is no longer the simple bull's head on a man's body but rather more of a humanoid bull.
Why, yes, as a matter of fact I am the Unfailing Arbiter of All That Is Good Design (Even More So Than The Actual Developers) TMSpeaking of things that were badly designed, please check out this thread for my Minotaur fix. What have the critics said, you ask? "If any of my players ask to play a Minotaur, I'm definitely offering this as an alternative to the official version." - EmpactWB "If I ever feel like playing a Minotaur I'll know where to look!" - Undrave "WoTC if you are reading this - please take this guy's advice." - Ferol_Debtor_of_Torm "Really full of win. A minotaur that is actually attractive for more than just melee classes." - Cpt_Micha Also, check out my recent GENASI variant! If you've ever wished that your Fire Genasi could actually set stuff on fire, your Water Genasi could actually swim, or your Wind Genasi could at least glide, then look no further. Finally, check out my OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE article, an effort to give unique support to the races that WotC keeps forgetting about. Includes new racial feature options for the Changeling, Deva, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goliath, Half-Orc, Kalashtar, Minotaur, Shadar-Kai, Thri-Kreen, Warforged and more!

Griffin is like a lion and hippogriff like a cheetah, Griffin like a boser dog and hippogriff like greyhound.
I like the picture of the right (the classic one from Monster Manual 3r Ed) and the new (black and white) from center-left.

A hippogriff was taught to me as as the offspring of a male griffon and mare by my old biology teacher who added on into my ecosystem project (JUST TO MESS WITH ME!).
He made me use the Orlando Furioso's version I belive.
"For him a filly to griffin bore; Hight hippogryph. In wings and beak and crest, Formed like his sire, as in the feet before; But like the mare, his dam, in all the rest"
So a horse with wings, an eagle head, talons for forlegs, and maybe a lion's tail.

For me, Hippogriff has always looked like Horse+Eagle and Griffon was Lion+Eagle, but that's simply how I told them appart.

In my worldview, a hippogriff is eagle/horse. A griffin (gryphon) is eagle/lion (or hawk/lion as a variant). Definitely not the same creature. Both have avian characteristics from beaks to front claws and wings, and mammal from shoulders/withers the rest of the way back.
Just as there can be varieties of eagles and hawks and of horses, there can be variants in both hippogriffs and griffins. (If there are variants of lions, then they can factor into it, too.)
In memory of wrecan and his Unearthed Wrecana.5e should strongly stay away from "I don't like it, so you can't have it either."
