I imagine the skill die usage as following:
DM: Make an int check! Player rolls d20 + 3 : 14 Player thinks about the situation: Can I notice something about the guy? DM: Maybe, roll your skill die and add it, if you are proficient in spot.
Also, it could be used as following:
DM: whats your strength score? Player: 17 DM: the bars don´t bend. Player: May I add my athletics die? (I am a fighter, I roll my strength die) DM: Yes! Player: +3 DM: With a bit of an effort, you bend the bars!
So with skill dice rolled after the ability check you can achieve two things:
1. You don´t give away, what exactly is rolled, if PCs don´t actually look for something etc. 2. Comparing attributes could make a return, as a random factor is added back in. So it is not always success or always failure.

Not till some undetermined time after Winter Fantasy (jan 24-27). He said they were previewing a new class there, and that it would be released to the general public at some point shortly after that. Wouldn't commit to an exact date though.

My guess is we will get a Magic Items and Sorcerer+Warlock style addition to the current packet with the new class.
