Dwarf, you are right that level drain, for example, makes a fairly memorable fight. Of course, memorable doesn't really mean fun. For example, I college, I got invited to a 2e game, where I was given a barbarian, who looked pretty straightforward - worse AC than the paladin, but more hp. Which lasted until we ran into some wights(?) who level drained me till I was useless (eventually his rage caused him to foolishly attack something too strong for him and die honorably.). When, later, I asked the dm what I had done wrong, he pointed out that successful parties had the wizard deal with the wights with spells. Which was the last time i played 2e.
Now, of course, the dm could have been better. And, had I played more, I might have gotten over the fact that when I played my character as designed, I was destroyed immediately because I didn wait on the wizard. But, that doesn't change my point - I never played 2e again because that kind of monster isn't my thing. If you want to kill me, and the dice end up that way, ill take it and create a death scene worthy of my char. But level drain me so that everyone is level 10 while I'm level 3, so I can't play the next session? That's unheroic, and just asking me to hate your game.
So, to each their own, and I hope you get monsters you don find dull. But as for me and mine? No permanent draining.

Level drained till level 3? Major restoration and poof- back to level 10 again. However I see how your experiences shaped your opinions of the game. Experience shapes perspective. Can't fault you there.

Still not a goot mechanic ofr parties lacking accress to restoration or are to low in level to cast it.

Bright - honestly, as I said, it was my first time with 2e - if there was a poof spell, I didn't know it. As I said - I know I was inexperienced and the dm could have been Better - perhaps if he'd had a cleric restore me, I'd have played the game longer. And, I'm in no way representative, nor saying 2e was wrong - just that I don't prefer level drain.

I like level drain just not as a permanent effect.

I think in 1e restoration was a very high level spell = as far as I could tell, it was meant to be a screw you, you might as well be dead mechanic. My first dm loved level drainers .... yuck.
