These are not deal breakers but they are on my wish list:

1. High level characters and campaigns are playable.
2. High level combat is no more time-consuming than low level combat.
3. Mechanics or guidelines exist for custom building new races, hybrid races, new classes, and hybrid classes.
4. No magic item dependence at any level. The system survives easily without magic items in play.
5. XP tables and encounter challenge levels are listed accurately. D&D has always struggled to measure the actual challenge level of an encounter and reward XP appropriately.  The current Next iteration seems to consider that 2 monsters is exactly twice as difficult to fight as one monster of the same type and ten monsters is exactly ten times as difficult, which isn't necessarily true.

Like I said, these are not deal breakers but they are annoyances.  The first 2 would lead to not playing at high levels. The next 2 would lead to house rules.  The last one would lead to  adlibbing XP values for each encounter (Something that I have always done but would prefer not to).

On ninjapirate's view on races.  This is pretty much the compromise I'd like to make when it comes to core.  It's not selfish, it's not inclusive, it doesn't push out old concepts or new ones.  All I'm asking for is to create something that works outside campaign settings, as many people (even here) take the notion of fluff pretty seriously.  Perhaps we should include the "legacy" stuff first, whatever.  That's the basis since the beginning that will pull in players old and new.  As for the more exotic, this should still stay, but under a monicker that doesn't clash with vanilla/generic D&D, perhaps have the (balanced) racial templates to shift out to your favorites right out of the box.  Perhaps extra fluff beyond that should be in campaign books (Less need to stuff campaign settings with too much mechanical stuff).  So, a generic enough baseplate with expansive options is a good compromise, I'd say.

Rewriting Al-Qadim, Anchorome, Maztica, Kara Tur, Katashaka, etc, in what way?

Al Qadim is pretty fine as is, but needs a little push to fit the Realms just a tad.  As for the others, they were made with the intention as addons without thinking about how they directly tie into the rest of the Realms.  I want them to feel like a living breathing part of the Realms.  Sure, this would require research (and retcons), but done well, would result in a more unified Abeir-Toril that feels like a high fantasy world similar to Greenwood's vision.  Plus, I hate the cosmic dumping ground (AKA "Abeir")

There were boxed sets, modules and novels that explained Kara-Tur, Horde and Maztica's relationship to Faerun.

I know of the boxed sets, I have them in my room.  But, I wish there was more to make it flow better with the Realms.  Like, Maztica had potential to add Mesoamerican mythology into the high fantasy world of Forgotten Realms, but came across as an expy of Europe's exploration period.  So much could have been handled differently and in a much more interesting way.  Now, if this was a different setting, I wouldn't care.  I mean, the home game I was in had a radically different take on Maztica and it was awesome!!  My notes were sprawled on a forum post a ways back, but all-in-all, that rewrite had much more of a Realmsian feel to it.

I have never understood this confrontational attitude between DMs and players. If the player is being a whiny jerk about things, and you are sure he is going to whine about everything and drag down the game, sure.

This is the attitude I was assuming by the use of the phrase 'acting like a troglodyte' in the post that began this part of the conversation.
