I am working on a class module that will plug into the 5E kernal.  I am using Incarnum for the Druid and Sorcerer classes.

Yes, because I am the troll that you are trying to paint me as instead of a 4E fan that is concerned with the direction 5E is going...

As a player and long time DM my main concern is your response here.  You are coming at 5e strictly as a 4e fan.  Have you ever played any of the other editions.  If not then you have missed out and maybe don't understand why others would disagree with what you want in a DnD edition that is meant for all of us.  A myopic view of what the best edition is or what it would be constituted of in the future is not an approach that needs to be taken.  At best it makes one sound like a tantrum throwing child.

I have been playing DnD for so long that I went out and bought a lot of 4e rules simply because it had DnD on the cover.  It turned out to be the most boring version of the game in my experience because it codified too much.  I had a player/DM friend who never played anything but 4e DnD who DMed a few sessions and a played in some sessions of 5e this year and he was blown away by the possibilities the simple playtest packets offered because there were many things that were not codified and left to the DM's discretion.  He realized that being the DM was a huge responsibility in that format of play but he enjoyed far more than he ever did running a 4e game.  The same proved true when he played because if the DM was good the game was better and more so if the players helped to tell the tale by roleplaying more.  In the end he learned what real roleplaying was like and he is really looking forward to the game going forward by going backwards some.

No. Unfortunately it's not like to get any better. WoTC is raring to get 5th Edition out to capitalize on those Hobbit movies!
Things that 5E needs to do:
-Make the use of battlemaps/miniatures the default.
-Make healing fun, magical AND non-magical needs to be an option. Long live the Warlord!
-Make magic items feel magic/mythical. I don't want a dagger +1, I want STING.

Yes. *pauses for gasps.*

There hasn't been a playtest packet I wouldn't buy because I like the simplicity of all of them and as a thinking individual I am able to houserule the basic structure to fit my table with minimal effort.

Of course all that assumes that the rules don't change next month, but they question kind of seems to assume that.

After this new one, yeah, yeah I absolutely would. Their ability to go from one playtest packet that is pretty much pure garbage to this one which is pure gold, is nothing short of amazing to me. If the next playtest packet after this one is just as much of an improvement, then I will be convinced of their ability to do anything because they must be flirting with dangerous dark magic to get this to be so awesome.

Sadly, no.  As it stands, there aren't much meaningful choices to be made in character creation, which is one of my favorite parts of the game.  By virute of the lack of choices, characters will be mostly cookie cutter.  That doesn't do it for me.

To be fair to the playtest packages I'd imagine they would drop in more selections than what they currently offer. But- the trend is for less choices overall.

No, even if they cleaned it up and polished it with things that they have said will be in there like legacy options, prestige classes, multi-classing and what not.

Rather than a modular system, to me it feels like they have an attempt at an updated OSR game. There's nothing wrong with OSR, but if I want that kind of campaign, I'll use one of the innovative retro clones already out there. I'd prefer them over where Next seems to be going.

It bums me out because I really think they've put a lot of thought and effort into class design, spell balance, combat speed, and some other aspects of the game. And they've done a great job with that stuff. It'd be nice to see that in a non-OSR version of D&D. Basically, I think a lot of what they have would work great smashed down into an old-school level 1-8 or so game, but I have hard time seeing how the high level play will be rewarding or interesting in Next.
