I've never enjoyed the fact that Paladin's and Blackguards were as morally diverse as the class could be... Since a Paladin could be very interesting as one of those Neutral folks and trying to stay in the middle ground to a fault and trying to get other people to do the same would make for intereseting role-play.

Champion of his belief system. That is what a paladin is and should be. (Whether or not there is a deity involved.)

To me a deity being involved is a requirement for a Paladin. That's literally the way I look at them. Champions of their Deities. Not a belief system. Buddhist Paladins for example... I don't really see happening. Leave that to the monks. Heh.

I can't tell if your being facetious or not, but I'm inclined to agree. So long as the backstory is stellar and you have a cool name.

I really am not, my albino drow chaos monks (from Limbo/The Elemental Chaos) are something to be feared in my campaign, and also annoying, because they never carry any gear (magic items...)!

Thanks for the moniker compliment, but that is directly plagiarised from the musical formartion that is Steely Dan (Donald Fagan and Walter Becker).

I see Paladins as warriors who fight to defend a set of principles or beliefs. They can adhere to the teachings of a religion, or not. I don't see them as Lawful Good (I also don't like alignment in general), I see them as following what they truly believe in. If the Fighter fights well because he relies on training, physical ability, and battle experience, the Paladin fights well because he absolutely, positively, will NEVER give up fighting for what they believe in. Hence why a Fighter would rely on Str/Dex/Con, while a Paladin would have Str/Con/Cha instead as potential favored attributes.

This isn't to say that a Fighter can't have strong beliefs that drive them, or that a Paladin can't have extensive battle experience, but when a fight breaks out, it a Fighter's weapon mastery that keeps them alive, and it's a Paladin's force of will that keeps them fighting. Likewise, a Fighter or Paladin can be driven by anger in battle, but only a Barbarian has the training to channel that into a Rage.

A Paladin might have (optional) rules that dicate they lose a portion of their power if they begin to lose faith in their cause, their religion, or themself, but I don't think a shift in their conduct should result in a loss of class features. In this way, you could have a righteous Paladin of light become slowly corrupted into a terrible Blackguard of darkness (same class and abilities) without ever realizing what they have become - you've removed the
"emergency brakes" that a 3E Paladin's Fall From Grace represented.

A Paladin would only be weakened by a loss of faith, and if in the inevitable period of introspection they realized how far they had strayed from their path - oh, the roleplaying potentials! It makes me actually WANT to play a Paladin for the first time ever.

Monks are fun like that! Played in a 4E Darksun campaign with a Monk. Weapon breaking rules need not apply, Mwhahahahaha!!

I know, that's why I implemented them, so cool, I even made one of them multi-limbed, and vile (hence the double-limbs...).
