That was the most lucid, thorough, informative and interesting analysis of a viewpoint I (still) think is completely misguided that I have ever read.
Thank you for writing that out. It really shed some new light for me on the other side of the fence, and I appreciate it.
(Yes, this is genuinely intended as a compliment.)

The earlier 1e-2e group had rules systems that were a mess. The game simply couldnt exist without the whim of DM arbitration. Hence the inescapable tyranny.
Maybe you should do some research so that you can understand what tyranny actually is. Let me give you a hint. It's not DM control and rulings. Until you actually understand what tyranny is and can use it correctly, you just can't be taken seriously when you talk about it.

@lokiare... your signature looks a bit wonky. The rating system is gone and seems to be replaced by a big gray rectangle with a yellow and a green bar.
Yeah, maintenance. I move my site over to WordPress and had to port over the PHP code... It should be working now...

I don't mean to jump in on this exchange but you've sparked my curiousity. In what way do you think it's completely misguided? I'm a firm believer in DM authority being necessary regardless, but I'd be interested to hear your take on it.

From Merriam-Webster:
tyr·an·ny noun \ˈtir-ə-nē\ plural tyr·an·nies 1 : oppressive power tyranny over the mind of man — Thomas Jefferson>; especially : oppressive power exerted by government tyranny of a police state> 2 a : a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler; especially : one characteristic of an ancient Greek city-state b : the office, authority, and administration of a tyrant 3 : a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force tyranny of the clock — Dixon Wecter> 4 : an oppressive, harsh, or unjust act : a tyrannical act tyrannies> I'm sorry but every one of those definitions apply to their post...

This whole idea of a DM owning a campaign is absolute bunk. The world is a shared storytelling experience that all players have a stake in. Some systems even support this mechanically; in Dresden Files RPG, players and the DM design the city, threats, and important NPCs of the campaign. In most FATE derivatives, as well as Marvel Heroic, players have points they can use to make declarations about the game world; to say that the players have no control is bunk invented by crappy DMs.

So yours is the one true way?

Just to note, the Kreen of Dark Sun are descended from the crew one of their ships that crashed on Athas.
In the Spelljammer Spacefarer's Companion (softcover, black), they mention that Athas is in a closed crystal sphere, but in the Dark Sun Dragon Kings supplement (hardcover) they have a diagram showing Athas being on an alternate material plane, but shares the astral, ethereal (Ravenloft), inner and outer planes with the Prime.

And further, in Thri Kreen of Athas they talk about the Mantis being descendants of survivors of a failed exploration group. Then in Preservers and Defilers they did... something... with the cosmology. The Gray is usually used as a buffer, planarly speaking. With a few holes punched to the Inner Planes. The closed Crystal Sphere, with the Xix Chil punching through, but becoming trapped is my personal favourite. When your ship has many canons, fire the one you like.
I have an answer for you, it may even be the truth.
