Point of order, wizards shouldn't have fireball period. Wizards are subtle. Sorcerers get the flashy-flashy crap like fireball and lightning bolt, wizards need to stick to charm person and transmute rock to lava.
Wow. Good job alienating 95% of the fan base.
Anyway, this is why WotC sent out that survey. They know exactly what the most iconic wizard spells are now (and I can guarantee that fireball made the lists of 99% of the respondents). Maybe the original concept should have had wizards with subtle spells and blast-y stuff on another class. But wizards (or "magic users") have been casting Fireball for over 30 years and they're not going to stop now.
you are trying to argue with a person who thinks spell names are uneeded fluff, she is unreasonable.
Okay, when did I say that spell names are unneeded fluff?
my bad, i mixed you with salla.
too many bronies in this thread.

o for people who wanted a more AEDU wizard in the new penny arcade podcast mike sais that the wizard is not done at this point and magical traditions will be added, but these haven't been designed yet.
that give abilities and modifies your spells.
so this might have a more AEDU option
The traditions he's talking about have been talked about before they are things like pyromancy, and evocations. Basically schools from previous editions meshed with specialty wizards... They have nothing to do with casting styles...

I was expecting something like spellpoints for Sorcerers or Warlocks.
So you can use 2 pts to cast a 2nd level spell, or two 1st level spells, or 1 1st level spell with double range, duration, area etc.
The flip side is only access 4 of the 8 schools of magic. (transmutation/abjuration/evocation/illusion/necromancy/divination/conjuration/enchantment)

Regarding Wizards, I always thought of them like in Elric/Stormbringer stories, none of them should be trusted, all of them are power hungry and they are all very secretive, especially around other spellcasters. Terry Pratchet followed on this theme by saying they instinctively tug in opposite directions if given ends of a rope.
But if Sorcerers and Warlocks are rogues and marauders then I say make the Wizards a universal guild trying to control the multiverse _by any means necessary_. The junior members would not even know how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Just submit feedback along the lines of "they're cool, but they don't provide a way to play a non vancian wizard. Provide a module for wizards that lets us play it with spell points, or something resembling the 4e power economy. "
If they ignore that feedback...then you will be far from alone in providing somewhat less polite feedback.
This is a pretty reasonable approach.
There isn't anything fundamentally wrong with either the Sorcerer or Warlock class, they just fail as Wizard substitutes.
It's also unfortuante that the caster system is being matched to baked in class abilities across the board.
So I'll be suggesting a decoupling of class abilities from casting system so that each casting system becomes a "drop in, drop out" module that can be used with any of the classes.
Gah. lol I hope that doesn't happen. To me, sorcs and warlocks should have different logistics and specific abillities, unless we're going to run the whole game on one logistics system. YMMV, of course.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.
