When I imagine a D&D goblin I rebember the Todd Lockwood´s picture from 3.5 Monster Manual. I don´t want goblins with big noses (it is for AD&D gnomes), but ape-like heads, like malicious chimpanzees.
I admit the green skin by goblinoids from other franchises are too great influence, but skin color is optional for subraces.
* I hope we could agree goblins can be one of the D&D common humanoids with best immune system. It shoud be showed by racial traits or monster qualities. (Con save bonus about sickness, for example). They could be inmune to some contagius curses like ghoul bite. Goblyns from Ravenloft settins would be the exception. I like the idea of grey-skin nofteratu-like goblin like spider-climber predator.
Goblins could be raised like flock by lord ghouls, vampires or be transformed warforged-like half-golems. Do you rebember the "zombies dwarfes" from Phantasma movie saga? And the Dwergi, the Dracula´s servants (Van Helsing, 2004 film).
* Sometimes goblins are good huargs riders. It shouldn´t be fogorten. Goblins could be good magic beasts tamers.
* Optional background. Goblins could be allowed like (no-loutish) slave caste in some civilized zones (and their hygienic habits would be considerably better). Goblin PCs could be fugitive slaves (or descendants).
* Optional background. Some goblins could be "rewarded" becoming "petitioners" (template from manual of planes) like no-stupy manes (fat mindless zombie-like, weakest tanar´ri). It could be a great surprise for PCs. Let´s imagine heroes when goblin shaman has summoned ancestor spirits, goblinoid manes.

Imagine a world where the first-time D&D player rolls stats, picks a race, picks a class, picks an alignment, and buys gear to create a character. Imagine if an experienced player, maybe the person helping our theoretical player learn the ropes, could also make a character by rolling ability scores and picking a race, class, feat, skills, class features, spells or powers, and so on. Those two players used different paths to build characters, but the system design allows them to play at the same table. -Mearl

@Luis_Carlos: You're overthinking this, man. Gobos do what gobos do....and that's whatever they want unless something bigger and meaner says otherwise.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in an thread with GM_Champion" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against AzureShade when card design is on the line!

Two things that bugged me about the pathfinder goblin. The gremlin thing, and they took away their wolves and gave them some kind of goblindog. I mean taking away the wolf is like taking the stars and stripes out of the American flag. Everything else was kinda interesting but all in all not that effective. IMHO.

I'd actually like goblins to have a vast array of looks - almost as if nature just plays utter havok with the goblin appearance.
Honestly - without the "cute" implications - Labyrinth goblins work for me.
I'm thinking of the word managerie when I think of a goblin den... some have lots of fur - some have big noses - bright green skin - dull grey skin... red eyes that glow in the slightest bit of light... black shark like eyes... broad maws - apeish faces - etc. etc.

It may not be exactly what I see goblins as, but this picture really captured what I think of as the "serious" side to goblins. The goblin pictures from Heroes of the Feywild look quite similar too. I think there should be some goblins that are goofy, but for more serious groups, these goblins seem pretty close to my ideal goblin. Small, beady-eyed and sneaky, yet still dangerous in large numbers (as you can see).

Here we are talking about D&D goblins. The thread has got tree parts.
- Game mechanic, monster stats & qualities and possible racial stats.
- Canon D&D background.
- Alternative homebrew background, created by DMs and fans. Monster stats should allow or do easier creating those alternative backgrounds.
* For me goblins with short noses, like bats, apes or classic nofteratu vampire are more intimidating or horrific that goblins with big long noses (like comic stupid evil characters from a children TV cartoon).
* Humanoid monsters need flexibility. If almots all goblins enemies are like rogues or rangers it´s too boring. PCs should can be surprised by enemies with different tatics and strategies. (for example barbarians with template wererat, or a factotum (core class from Dungeonscape) leader, or a swashbuclker elite bodyguard, or riding winged velociraptors.
