I d/l'd and play tested the game. we decided since we are an old school group that stays at osrgaming's forums, that we would play test it "old school style". We recorded it and had it up well before penny arcade thought about iT and we decided it was basically like playing a stripped 3e game. Asa DM I found it gave me a headache, and the players thought the characters were too powerful. We haven't played it sinc, as we are waiting to see what round two looks like. If it continues this path, most OSR people will not buy, no matter how much WOTC claims it can be old school. So we tried it, and we will look at the second round stuff. But hey we tried and gave it a shot, no hate to those who love, its just not for us so far.
Thanks

Have you tried playing without themes and/or backgrounds?
I think that the way skills work is far closer to 2e NWP than to 3e skills.
I also felt healing was just a place holder and the Devs have stated grittier natural healing will be included in the next playtest.
I'm ginuinely curious.
I'm assuming by your avatar that you are a 1e player correct?
What would it require to feel more like DnD to you?

Yes we did play with out themes and backgrounds...
That is a tough question, yes I am a constant 1e player, and yes I know it will never be AD&D again. So basically I can either keep playing my Ad&d or suck it up and play 5e. More than likely, I will just close my mouth and play what I like and not annoy those who enjoy what this game is.

I'd rather see you give input so that some of that older feel can return.

Well I will. I promised everyone that I would go through this and play it.

Glad to hear it.
I really think we need feedback from all editions.
I've played 1e but got my start in 2e and have played every edition along the way.
Each one has something to bring to the table.

Yes. I agree, each edition has its merits and brings a different flavor to the table. Its just that 3e and up, some how the flavor of playing a game that was exciting, has been lost to me. It doesn't have the same feeling of how it does when I play 1E. I feel as though things are too layed out in the book and the whole suspense of you are going to die is lost.

I can see how that could be the case.
Perhaps my experience was different in that I brought the 2e mindset and adventure design style with me into my 3e group.
I tend to see the codification as an in depth system of guides to making descisions on the fly.
But I did miss the idea that what you knew was what you could do.
So yeah I see where you are coming from and why.

thank you. I was reading how people want more hit points and be able to walk in a room and just destroy everything they see and barely get hurt. Why would someone want this? The whole point of the game originally, was to go out and explore, but also do it carefully, because there is things lurking out there that can kill you easily. Which made you THINK before you acting and enjoy the story the DM crafted before you. Plus its aways fun to open up that door and see this big bad creature and say "Yipes!" slamming the door close to run away

Believe me there are as many like you and I out there as there are of the players you describe.
I think there is plenty of room for all of us if handled properly.
Don't give up hope.
