The willing (wanting) to DM thing is cool; need more of those for this game.
You have gotten great advice on where to start by generous board members.
Well I avidly write my own stories, and I feel like this is a great way to let my creative juices flow, though I've seen other people, off these boards, say that their stories usually end up going in a different direction than expected, but I feel that just allows me to make an even greater world. The epic lands, and world, I can create are endless. Also, I agree, this seems like an extremely friendly board, and I have no doubt in my mind that I will make some great friends playing this game.

So, in summary, if you want to learn the rules, and already have some players in mind, go to your local game shop and pick up the 4e core books. If you want to meet people, ask your store about Encounters, other D&D events, and about bulletin boards/if they know anyone.
If you have more questions, feel free to post them to 4e General Chat. You can also PM me, and while I can't quite tell you it's okay to PM anyone else, odds are most people are willing to help to the best of their ability. It's a rare D&D'er who won't help out a newcomer.
Thanks for the summary, I'll also look into the 5th edition as everyone else mentioned, but thanks. I can't wait to get started (:

That's a great suggestion. I'm curious though, will I need to pay to play online? Also should I read some of the manuals first before joining this session? I'm going to read through the threads you have posted, and see if I can find some of that info. If you already know it's on there, then no reply necessary.
For what he is offering, no, I'm pretty sure it's free.

Exercising creativity is quite fun, just remember: The players will always end up doing what you don't expect.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

I recall, someone describing it as preparing a gourmet dinner, and watching those who are dining on it throwing the plate at the wall haha. I feel like it will be still excting, especially having the opportunity to weave stories together, or getting to let me story play itself out when I get the opportunity.

Its totally Free! You'll need to have signed the OPTA and downloaded the Playtest materials from WoTC's website and read it if you want to understand the rules of the game a little bit but its very easy you'll see!

That's good to know. I'm going to read through it tomorrow, but I added you as a friend and I hope you accept. I want to get started as soon as possible. I just hope the 'noobiness' embedded within in me doesn't disrupt the flow of your game haha.

From what I hear the organized play is ummmm a lowest common denomenator... sigh.
Well...as a 4E fan Garth...do you think this would be a -bad- place for me to 'get a feel' for how it is currently played at your 'average' table?
I can scream at the top of my lungs yes. They feel very combat focused, so anyone who sits there might think "Wow, they killed all the Roleplaying in 4e" when it's just the adventures are designed for people to sit down and fight things.
They are called encounters afterall.
They are fun, that's for sure, but if you wanted to get a holistic view of what the system plays and feels like, probably not the best option. You'd be better listening to some podcasts of games that go on.
