Now I do understand that there were some problems with the pre-4th Wizard and other spellcasters but I don't think it's as frequent as people claim and I don't want the design of D&D Next to be influenced by this like 4th edition was.
For those of you that claim the fighter sat around and did nothing while the spellcasters won all of the encounters, I want you to give round by round, level by level, day by day, and encounter by encounter recalls of how this came to pass.
Just saying you can just use spells XY and Z are not good enough because that exists in a vacuum. If anyone has ever played a spellcaster then they know damn well that they will not always have the right spell memorized for just such an occasion. Scrolls and wands are fine but you still need actions during combat to use those. Don't forget about action economy as well and time frames in between encounters.
What's boring to one person is excitement to another and I want D&D Next to reflect this in it's design.

And the reason why this couldn't have been posted in a " Why do people want the return of quadratic Wizards and linear Fighters" thread is...?

Unoptimized fireball-lobbing sorcerer throwing fireballs, one-shots most encounters and the "boss"-fights. Every other member of the group was miffed by the domination that we've seen first hand, but we kept on trucking because the story was nice. The fights, though, were boring as hell. The ranger felt totally useless among a cleric, sorcerer and druid.
Demanding a round-by-round, encounter-by-encounter, day-by-day report is a bit ridiculous, don't you think?
Or will you now discredit my first hand experience because I don't remember 100 session that happened about six years ago?

Anyway, I can tell you that I had a wizard in one campaign during 3.5 that ran a Quickened, Split-Ray Disentegrate build that destroyed encounters before anyone could do anything, monsters included.

Then let's see this build of yours.
I could say I have a build that could destroy everything that exists but it doesn't hold any water unless I post it.

Xun,
I am exlusively pre 4e player.
As such I would like to state that the request to discuss this in quadratic wizards vs linear fighters is a valid one.
Please stop adding more fuel to the fire.
We are not helping by emphasizing our differences.
Instead we need to be looking at how to fix their concerns with our favored system while not creating our concerns with their favored system.

I don't want this topic lost amongst the other stuff that's going on in that thread.
This thread is purely dedicated to seeing the proof of these claims that we hear about.

Hey guys, While it's certainly great to share builds and discuss Wizards and Fighters in depth, please do so without making directed attacks on other players. There's no sense fighting when we can all work together and get some progress on the topic, and make for great discussion for all. If you have any questions, feel free to check out the Code of Conduct. Thanks for your understanding, happy gaming!

No offense to you personally, but that is ridiculous.
And I say that from a purely neutral standpoint* - if you were asking it of people who "claim the fighter was powerful and interesting and always contributed - if not shined - in combat", it would still be ridiculous.
* Obviously I have opinions on the matter, but they don't matter at all as to whether or not the request is preposterous.

Yes, I am expressing my opinions (even complaints - le gasp!) about the current iteration of the play-test that we actually have in front of us.
No, I'm not going to wait for you to tell me when it's okay to start expressing my concerns (unless you are WotC).

So what's so ridiculous about it?
Saying something is ridiculous without reasons why it's ridiculous is pointless.
When people claim that 4th edition sucks and plays like a video game the defenders come a calling wanting proof to these claims.
Well we are allowed to do the same thing, especially when we didn't experience the problems that some people here claim.
