Interesting Survey.
i am not sure where htey are going with it, but man it took me a WHILE to really consider the question of which spells were iconic for each level for each caster (wizard and Cleric). I agonized over that for a while.
In the end I chose the spells that were used most frequently in my experience (since 1984). Although I recognized a lot of them of course, Some were rarely used and I kind of used that initially as my guide but in particular the 3rd level spells were difficult to choose from.
Which raised an interesting question for me: Is this an attempt to pare down the spells? Or is it an effort to re-determine spell levels? Or is it just a way to determine if they need to add more to different schools of magic than they have now. I mean if everyone always picks evocation, then other schools may need their spells brought down to make the decision tougher. Alternately the spells could be empowered and thus become more attractive that way.
Anyways, Interesting survey.

I hope that this is not them trying to figure out which ten spells they want to make available per level as I would be incredibly disappointed in reducing the spells to choose from. I would like social, utility and combat spells in the game and if they limit the spells available it will be hard to have all three kinds.

I would actually prefer it if they removed alot of these spells from the class lists and moved them to Rituals exclusively. Keep the Daily spell slots reserved specifically for combat and short-duration spells.

Indeed, nothing says "I'm a real wizard now!" like third level spells...

Rituals are a "second way" to do things, not a replacement for spells in combat and more intense situations. Idont like dividing tem out but I DO like being able to do it both ways. More options equals good.

Personally, I could see a lot fewer buff spells. There are currently a jillion (maybe two jillion), and they pretty much all do the same 2 or 3 things in slightly different ways. There's just no point in having all those spells and making each one of them unique; that just introduces a lot of bookkeeping, complexity, and redundancy. Plus, casting buffs in battle - and spending precious actions to do so - is about the least glamourous thing a caster can do. Not to mention the potential real-world hours - seriously, hours - you can spend planning out a high-level battle where you have to cover dozens of different buffs. I say: let's trim some fat. Oh, and another thing: it seems like D&D is the only game where "2nd level" spells are gained at 3rd level. So odd, when you stop and think about it. They need better names for stuff.

My guess is that they wanted to make sure the most iconic spells for each level were included in the next playtest, so that they could start hammering out what would be the most used materials for the Wizard and the Cleric.
Also, this would point out those spells that are, for whatever reason, not very popular. This way, they could examine those spells, and see what they might need to do to make them more lucrative.
That warm fuzzy feeling you get when you a forum thread you're subscribed to has a new comment.
