So, how many of you posters have actually playtested Caves of Chaos. I see a lot of people making statements that show they haven't really played with the playtest material. They might have read it, but not actually played through with the characters.

Ran and played it twice. Most notably was bored to tears with at-will spam. A friend of mine went as far as to cross out the name he gave his human cleric, and renamed himself Radiant Lance.

Ran it and played it both. Enjoyed both. I like the Advantage mechanic, although I felt overpowered having that silly Magic Missile every round on my wizard. I like the direction things are heading in, but of course there are some rough edges that need to be worked out.
Do not like the full hp return at all, but I love the HD mechanic.

I took a lot of the advice on how to change it up. One giant central ravine where races are warring? Ehh... Didn't make sense to me. So I moved the caves apart. What I'm getting at is yes. Yes, I ran CoC. I've got a group who wanted to play it more than our 4e game so we've kinda gone past the CoC playtest. I am a bit worried abt how to handle their xp since they are now level 3. I ran a oneshot with some old friends who offered up a lot of feedback from a 3.x point of view.

I have been Playtesting using the Cave of Chaos for a few months now, but mostly as a DM. We did a dozen forays before i started to do some conversion of AD&D and 4E adventures to DDN.

In my opinion from testing some kobold, goblin and orc caves, magic missile isn't that bad when your enemies have more than 2 hitpoints.
I am really liking how the classes fit together, the warrior is simply a beast when it comes to damage and hitting, and I luv the 2 extra actions daily he gets at lvl 2. The playtest rogue isn't my favorite, but I see how you could make a some really great rogue builds in the system (a skills master and still good in combat.)

I've been using the mechanics, if not the actual module (I just ran Caves of Chaos last summer in PathFinder).

Yah you're right on that Philip; I'm more of a player who actually -enjoys- being 'forced' to resort to flinging daggers or a hand crossbow bolt or something when out of spells, so it's more a stylistic thing to me rather than a 'this is mechanically overpowered' thing. I do hope the rogue gets a bit more love. He doesn't need to beat the fighter, but they do need -something- to do other than trying to get sneak attack every other round, even if it's less -overall- damage.

I have indeed been running the Cave of Chaos, as I have neither enough information nor time to make my own adventure. Frankly, I think it's a significant part of the reason my sessions have been so poorly received... my group loathes this style of adventure.
My group is done play testing until we get some new material. I really hope we see something other than the Caves of Chaos in the next release. Ideally they would have used something which supports mutliple styles of adventure (structured and sandbox; combat, exploration, and social).
D&D Next... for those who would rather play a version of D&D they dislike the least, rather than the one they like the most!

How have they felt about the actual rules in use (as opposed to the style)? Do they feel comfortable with them? Like, not like advantage?
