My greatest fears for D&D Next:
- A WoW/Diablo'esque system to appeal to the MMO players out there.
- Limited character development options that prohibit/restrict concept building
- Limited character development options done intentionally for massive cash-grab vis a vis splat book generation
- Oversimplifying the system even further than 4e (Thac0 was used to weed out players not smart enough to game effectively - time to bring it back)
- Stupid gaming worlds (Eberron) when there are better, classic gaming worlds to play in (Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Ravenloft) with far larger fan-bases and interest.
- Ignoring or half-assing said gaming worlds for whatever reason (Planescape, Ravenloft, Dragonlance)
- New dice for specialized rolling (DM: "Okay, I need you to roll your D42 for your divination results ... no, your D42 - that's your D50...no, that's your D37...that's your D42!")
- Errata...I really fear errata. I'd like to see them get it right the first time.
- Healing surges. Seriously - I remember playing D&D and it was always the question of who wanted to be the mage and who wanted to be the band aid to keep the mage alive. THAT was fun.
- Scathing rebukes for my opinions expressed here.

I am not worried about D&D Next not being fun. In fact, 4e to me was not fun, so I don't play it. I stick to 3.5 and I houserule as necessary and I'm happy to continue playing D&D and will happily die playing 3.5 if D&D 5th Edition is the suck to me the way 4e was (note: I indicated that 4e was the suck to me, not to everyone). If WotC wants to make a product without taking into account concerns of the player base, I'm fine with that. If they produce a wonderful system, I will laud them copiously and upturn my wallet at the base of the Golden Gygax statue. If they don't, I won't spend money on it. Then I'll wait until 6th edition is released, which should be approximately 2018 if the timeline stands (2000 for 3.0, 2003 for 3.5, 2008 for 4th edition, 2013 for D&D Next if it is on schedule). Note: The above comments are in response to a question. They express the opinion of the poster and are do not reflect the views or attitudes of the OP, succeeding posters or WOTC in any way, shape or form.

Really? I didn't know that. That's actually pretty sad (not that I think you needed me to tell you that, but simply expressing my sympathy).

That they don't show their math and the edition has core errors at launch.
Everyone is looking at you, 4e.

4e showed their math, but still had core errors at launch XD. I'm not sure how they messed that up.

Yeah, I had a conversation with David Noonan at The London Dungeon (2007), and he was telling me about their "magic spreadsheet".

While this might not be possible, I actually want to playtest the final game before they print it.
Just short of that I want to playtest the final math. I want full character advancement and all the DM generation tables. I don't need the fluff, just the crunch.
And so far, they have been pretty forthcoming. The initial playtest has some advancment to it, it wasn't just static 1st level pregens.

...that it is going to be a regression, not a progression.
That's my biggest fear too.
"What is the sort of thing that I do care about is a failure to seriously evaluate what does and doesn't work in favor of a sort of cargo cult posturing. And yes, it's painful to read design notes columns that are all just "So D&D 3.5 sort of had these problems. We know people have some issues with them. What a puzzler! But we think we have a solution in the form of X", where X is sort of a half-baked version of an idea that 4e executed perfectly well and which worked fine." - Lesp "They are making it clear that when modern design and common sense come into conflict with tradition, tradition wins." - Thecasualoblivion

Yes! No surprises!
I want an errata-free hardcover that we have already playtested. So we already know it works well and can survive abuse.
