Things I would like to see for a “simple” fighter:
- One additional feat at level one (Power Attack could be great)
- A bonus to AC when using armor (a fighter should be tougher to hit)
- A bonus to “To-hit” with all weapons (a fighter should be better attacking with a weapon than any other class)
- A reaction to attack creatures that leave an adjacent square
- Increase the number of additional attacks granted at level two to 4 attacks (instead of 2) per day
- A charge mechanic, such as the one of the Minotaur and the Orcs.

What I want to see in fighters:
1. More powerful feats, especially better feats with pre-reqs. Really, really powerful. If you have mages throwing around half a dozen fireballs or more in a game, powerful feats should be things like shouting to make all of your opponents make a save check or run/surrender/pass out, leaping all the way across the room, attacking everybody in a line up to your movement, etc. The idea that mages should be based on mythos and fighters should be based on reality is . If you can do what Merlin does, then I can do what Hercules does. You want to play Gandalf? Fine, I'll play Conan.
There is no #2. The system for fighters at 3.5 is great, they just nerfed it.

The idea here is to increase the customization of the fighter (before entering the realm of combat maneuvers). Another idea is that instead of just give the fighter an extra feat at level one, we can provide the fighter with feats EVERY level.
Clerics and Wizards seem to receive new spells every level, so it won’t be a crazy idea if the fighter receive a feat every level.
Mike Mearls mentioned before, they are tinkering with the idea of giving the fighter two themes. Maybe the feats (or other abilities) granted at any odd levels, should be from the second theme.

If you mean the concept was great and the feats sucked then yes.
THe problem with the feat-based fighter is that unless you give him a prodigious number of feats or make feats individually more powerful and important then many class features outweigh entire feat chains. For example the 3.5 druid and fighter, unless you picked archery the druid AC could probably do your specialty better than you, charging, grappling, even tripping and poison were all things that animals tended to be better at than humanoids.
