The armor system, IMO, needs some changes. As an example, why would you want Plate armor when Scale or Splint with a decent Dexterity score is just as good without the speed penalty. How about if everyone's armor class was figured without armor, showing their ability to dodge attacks, and then armor comes in as a way of damage reduction to certain types of attacks. Then the different types of armor actually mean something. At least bring back ranged touch attacks as there are some attacks that armor shouldn't help against.

The better question is why anyone would by Ring Mail, when for 25 gold less, you can get a Chain Shirt, have the same exact armor bonus, be able to apply your dexterity to your AC, and don't take a movement speed penalty. Heavy Armor literally asks you to pay more to penalize your character. At least they're keeping with D&D traditions

Honestly this is why I think AC may need to be replaced.
Take the three NADs from 4e.
Weapon attacks get split among fort and ref.
Armor now penalizes certain skills, speed, and maybe reflex, in exchange for damage reduction.

If the AC for medium and heavy armor were each raised by +1, I think it would work fine as is.

If they did this AND got rid of the penalties for wearing heavy armor, it might not be too bad. Heavy armor is still way expensive though.

I feel that mithral chainmail should cost 10x more.
I agree that the AC for medium and heavy can be raised.
Medium and heavy armours should make a character slower, however, they should also provide some immunities. Example: Wearing full plate could make you immune to slings and small bows.

Armor is definitely unbalanced right now. I think the medium armor category could probably go and the various armors moved into the light and heavy armor category. I can't think of a reason to have it outside of requiring one more feat to get up to heavy armor and that isn't really a good enough reason.
Heavy armor shouldn't make someone slower. Someone with the Strength enough to wear it, can wear it like they carry anything else. If they don't have the Strength to wear it, then they will be subject to the penalties of encumberance. The only penalties heavy armor should have are to swimming and stealth. I think heavy armor should provide full Dexterity bonus to AC.
As there will be unbalance with light and heavy armor, I definitely think it should tip in favor for the heavy armor.

For Armor Fix:
Have 3 Classes of Armor (yes, I know, "Armor Classes"), well, 4 technically since None is a class I guess.
None-this armor can be used by all, it requires no special training, just suit up and go.
Basic-requires some basic training. Most classes will have access to Basic Armors, Wizard will not.
Military-requires a more formal military training in their use and field experience. Fighters get Military Armors, maybe also Clerics of a War god.
Advanced-requires training more advanced training and devotion and focus to learn and keep up in the skill. Only a special feat or perhaps a Theme or maybe a race bonus gets you this.
Armor / Armor Bonus / Ability Scores Used / Speed Penalty / Skill Check Penalty
Padded (None, Light) / +1 / Dex or Wis / 0 / -1 Leather (Basic, Light) / +2 / Dex or Wis / 0 / 0 Chain Shirt (Military, Light) / +3 / Dex or Wis / 0 / 0
Hide (Basic, Medium) / +4 / Half Wis or Half Con / -1 / -2 Chain (Military, Medium) / +5 / Half Wis or Half Con / -1 / -1 Breastplate (Advanced, Medium) / +6 / Half Wis or Half Con / 0 / -1
Scale (Basic, Heavy) / +7 / No Ability Mod / -2 / -4 Plate (Military, Heavy) / +8 / No Ability Mod / -2 / -3 Full Plate (Advanced, Heavy) / +9 / No Ability Mod / -1 / -2
Light Shield (Basic, Shield) / +1 / No Ability Mod / 0 / 0 Heavy Shield (Military, Shield) / +2 / No Ability Mod / 0 / -1 Tower Shield (Advanced, Shield) / +3 / No Ability Mod / -1 / -2 Buckler* (Advanced, Shield) / +1 / No Ability Mod / 0 / 0 Armor Shielding* (Advanced, Shield) / +1 / No Ability Mod / 0 / 0
Light Shields allow you to hold something in that hand but not wield it. Heavy and Tower Shields prevent you from using that hand at all. *(Bucklers allow you to use that hand freely, as if you did not have a shield. Armor Shielding only applies to Medium and Heavy Armors, you add these additional bits of shielding and know how to use them to gain the equivalent of a light shield without losing use of your hand. Does not stack with other shield armor bonuses.)
Armor Bonus adds to your AC. Ability Score used means you pick the better of the 2 choices. Speed Penalty is in squares. Skill Penalty is to skills that are based on Str, Dex or Con, but not Attack Rolls.
I think Wis makes since instead of Dex as you can be quick or rely on your senses and perception (Wis) to make best use of your armor and gain a good defense. So Light armor lets you pick whichever you want of these 2. For Medium Armor, since Dex is more restricted, Wis comes out as the stat that can help you make the most of this armor, or Con since the armor does not fully delfect and absorb blows as well as Heavy Armor does, so if you are tough enough (Con) you can shake off those "hits" that would only bruise you or hurt a lesser person, also you need endurance when wearing the armor more than light, so this helps you avoid being worn out by the armor.
