So far, some of my PCs are having fun at this moment, one isn't.

Combat: He suggests that you open more options up to think tactically in the main book.  To move tatically and to make an option.  He likes the change in action economy, allowing you to move and not expend your action. And he says there isn't much of a difference from any other edition of D&D.

I don't know what he is going for at that point. Other players said that that they liked the new mechanics they saw, and combat was simple.  But the only issue they had was what little options in combat they can do.

Aesthetics: The game has 3e language and gives off a definite 1e vibe.  THIS IS A GOOD THING!  The players enjoyed the themes and the backgrounds.  One player definitely said that this iteration of the rules is definitely better than fourth, which is an awesome thing to say at this point.

Patterns: No pattern report at this time, except to say that the combat system as it stands resembles Shadowrun.

[Thu May 24 16:08:23 2012] : (5734) DM EltonEXT. FOREST -- DARK, FORBIDDEN, SHADOWY, YOU HAVE THE JITTERS.

[Thu May 24 16:08:48 2012] : (5734) DM EltonNo save vs. fear here, though. :P

[Thu May 24 16:09:01 2012] : (5761) Midnight(i can't find skills *sad*)

[Thu May 24 16:09:52 2012] : (5734) DM EltonYou have been p(a)ssing through this forest for some time. As it grows denser and gloomier, until the mishapen trees and grasping briars suddenly give way to a ravine. It's walls -- dark, streaked rock mingled with earth.

[Thu May 24 16:10:36 2012] : ** (5761) Brawn Axecleaver smiles holding his axe on his shoulder. "I like this place." He says looking for stuff to fight. **

[Thu May 24 16:11:17 2012] : (5734) DM EltonSo, you have stumbled into a 100 foot ravine. Clumps of trees, some dead, some stand even on the slopes. The opening you are in is about 200 ft wide.

[Thu May 24 16:11:34 2012] : ** (5689) Warsor truds through these damned and creepy woods his warhammer slung over one shoulder. He glances around at his companions, he isn't a talkative one but he gets the job does with protection and healing. **

[Thu May 24 16:12:02 2012] : (5734) DM EltonAnd the ravine runs at least 400 feet to the west. Which means that this is before your eyes at 12 o'clock.

[Thu May 24 16:15:01 2012] : (5768) WulfricOkay, so here's how I'm reading this. You prepare spells outside of combat. This takes an indeterminant amount of time, but must be done outside of combat. After that ,you have your spells allocated to your spell slots (assuming you're not a spontaneous caster) and can expend said slots per encounter, not per day.

[Thu May 24 16:15:26 2012] : (5734) DM EltonAt varying hieghts on all sides of the ravine are the black mouths of caves in the rock walls. The sunlight is dim and the air is dank. With the oppressive feeling that something that could hurt you is watching.

[Thu May 24 16:15:55 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( Also, I am now Bob the Rogue for playtest purposes ))

[Thu May 24 16:16:27 2012] : ** (5689) Drohad the Dwarf Grunts to the elven wizard looking to her. **

[Thu May 24 16:16:34 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( I'm also a halfling. Halfling named Bob. ))

[Thu May 24 16:17:14 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(*changes fox name*)

[Thu May 24 16:17:37 2012] : (5734) DM EltonA flock of ravens rises, croaking from the ground, terrain magnifying the beat of their wings and cries into a horrible sound. Among the litter of rubble boulders and very dead wood on the ravine.

[Thu May 24 16:17:56 2012] : ** (5768) Bob the Rogue shoots a raven. **

[Thu May 24 16:18:12 2012] : (5734) DM EltonYou see . . . bones of humans, and a dead raven falling out of the sky.

[Thu May 24 16:18:32 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue"Hey, guys! I got dinner!"

[Thu May 24 16:18:37 2012] : ** (5689) Drohad the Dwarf gives Bob a look and shakes his head. **

[Thu May 24 16:18:54 2012] : (5734) DM EltonThere are also animals ad magical creatures' bones strewn all about. What do you do?

[Thu May 24 16:19:14 2012] : ** (5768) Bob the Rogue looks at the animals and magical creatures bones strewn about. "And I can make windchimes!" **

[Thu May 24 16:19:39 2012] : ** (5689) Drohad the Dwarf stays alert, expecting trouble. **

[Thu May 24 16:20:12 2012] : ** (5768) Bob the Rogue stuffs the raven into his bag, saving it for later. He'll look at the magical bones strewn about, and knowing that there's probably going to be some undead threat at some points, he'll start breaking the bones as he walks through. **

[Thu May 24 16:20:43 2012] : (5734) DM Elton(Fox, you're not responding. . . )

[Thu May 24 16:21:10 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(i think shes awol)

[Thu May 24 16:21:43 2012] : (5734) DM EltonSo, you have discovered the caves of Chaos. Please take note that you are some distance away from Sharn, and the Keep on the Borderlands is your only hope for help.

[Thu May 24 16:22:42 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( How far away is the keep on the borderlands? And are there caged elephants there? ))

[Thu May 24 16:22:43 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver"Well Clerics first." He smiles letting his friend ahead.

[Thu May 24 16:23:19 2012] : (5734) DM EltonIt's a afternoon's walk away. I have the 2e module of this, so I know exactly where it is.

[Thu May 24 16:23:26 2012] : (5734) DM EltonI forgot, it's partly cloudy.

[Thu May 24 16:23:48 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( How...how could you forget such a thing!? THAT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW!!! ))

[Thu May 24 16:24:00 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!!! ))

[Thu May 24 16:24:21 2012] : ** (5689) Drohad the Dwarf Hmrphs and holds his Heavy shield up and his Warhammer ready as he slowly advances toward the cave. **

[Thu May 24 16:24:25 2012] : (5768) Bob the Rogue(( On a serious note, a day's travel to get back to the only place with medical fascilities? This might be fun. ))

[Thu May 24 16:24:54 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(just kill them before they kill you. the cleric can keep us alive)

[Thu May 24 16:24:55 2012] : ** (5768) Bob the Rogue sneaks in on everyone's flank, since he's a halfling rogue of rogue-ness with sneaky tendancies. That should be an alignment. Chaotic Sneaky.**

[Thu May 24 16:25:34 2012] : (5689) Drohad the Dwarf"Actually hold up a moment."

[Thu May 24 16:25:43 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(wouldn't that make me Neutral Cleaving?)

[Thu May 24 16:25:49 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver"Whats up?"

[Thu May 24 16:25:53 2012] : ** (5689) Drohad the Dwarf does something with his weapon, saying a blessing over it and it begins to glow with holy light. **

[Thu May 24 16:26:00 2012] : (5689) Drohad the Dwarf"There we go."

[Thu May 24 16:26:12 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(do we wanna go on without fox?)

[Thu May 24 16:26:48 2012] : (5761) Brawn Axecleaver(thats 3 votes for waiting)

[Thu May 24 16:27:07 2012] : (5734) DM Elton[1d4] => [1] = (1)

One of the players stresses that you should have options for a spellpoint system as an optional rule in the main book rather than just spells per day (Vancian).  This way, it will make more logical sense to him and to  others.  Just as another aside.

[Thu May 24 16:39:00 2012] : (5689) Drohad the Dwarf(Cleric of pelor is the other character that fill s a primary healer)

[Thu May 24 16:39:02 2012] : (5768) Bob the RogueAlright, found the actual section on spellcasting. Apparently you have infinite casting outside of combat, but inside combat you have your spell slots per day. I was wrong about the per encounter bit, which is odd...

I imagine alot of the basic attack boringness will be alleviated once the system is more developed. The direction they are going leads me to believe that additional options like trip, disarm, charge, aerial type attack options, etc are en route.

The advantage and disadvantage system can be used on the fly when someone wants a combat option.

A fighter flipping over a table in an enemies face need not be a specific mechanic manaeuver. The Dm can just say 'Advanatage and or Disadvantage' on the fly.

The tricky part is not allowing every possible action to qualify for adv/disadv.

One of the players stresses that you should have options for a spellpoint system as an optional rule in the main book rather than just spells per day (Vancian).  This way, it will make more logical sense to him and to  others.  Just as another aside.

Might I suggest Runequest

Agree. It happens in every system: the basics is what you must try, and if it's solid, you can twist it at will!

Addendum:

One of my players who I thought was having fun does not enjoy playtesting.  But she does offer some interesting observations about the wizard.

Wizards, listen up.

I do offer the observation that of the five classes, the wizard seems to be the least effective at actually having an impact on combat, apart from the Sleep spell.  The healer-cleric has the ability to do 1d8+4 as a cantrip even.

I'm observing that the healer gets this effect at range, while the wizard who has far less survivability would need to get into melee to perform the same level of effect, at-will. For 1st level spells...  I can't really compare 1st level spells because the wizard's 2d4+3 option has the AoE thing going where the cleric's massive 4d6+4 is single target.

The wizard just seems to be the least capable out of the characters presented in this playtest.

----------------------------

She also said that the Skill System needs to be fleshed out and explained in the PHB.  So there you have it, the Wizard is now the weakest class in the game.  You guys have hollered and screamed for Wizard Fighter balancing, and now the Wizard is nerfed beyond usefulness in combat.  The Cleric of Pelor can call down a ray of sunlight and sizzle his foes at 1d8+4 damag, but the Wizard can dust off magic missile that is 1d4+1 in damage.

I suggest bringing the magic missile back up to it's 2nd Edition/1st Edition status as a 1d6+1 damage spell, so that the Wizard's one damage spell can do comparatively as much damage as the Cleric of Pelor's ray of sunlight.  At level 1.

100% Speculation Here:

With the direction they seem tobe going design wise, I think it's safe to expect Wizards to be weaker at level 1 and amazing at higher levels, whereas fighters start out hot and gradually tamper off. (Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards)

Well I suggest something else: magic missile is an autohit, so it better be weak. However, putting up some other damage cantrip and regular damage spells is invaluable: since the wizard can't heal, can't do decently well at melee and is worse than the cleric at buffing, the wizard MUST do more damage then the cleric, or "blaster wizard" becomes a trap-option. No, oddball tricky spells like "grease" are not enough.

Also, I'm afraid 15-minute workdays are back, wich invariably brings caster-dominace back too.

My character is called Ryotto Tyrannicide, wich comes from "tyrannicidal riot".

He wields two magic swords: King Beheader (as in "Beheader of Kings", not "King the Beheader") and Chain Splitter. He's also a bit of a skirt-chaser.

So yeah, I REALLY hope you have some Lawful Evil bad guys prepared for me. Government/trade/church conspiracies are optional, but highly recommended.
