I had hoped that armor proficiency would be more of a background or theme feature, and less of a class one, but it seems characters are stilll restricted in armor choices based on class.
I could see a soldier/wizard having heavier armor (see also my thread on magic and armor) while a scholarly cleric might have light or even none. Hopefully these kind of things will be in the later system options.

I am chalking this one up to playtest efficiency. This is a test to check out the core rules, and I would not consider exploring side options to have certain types of armoring on arcane casters part of the core ensemble.
That being said, in my 20 years of gaming, the option of wearing armor for arcane casters has hardly ever surfaced except in the cases of "elven X" armor.
Most of the time bracers worked just fine.

Oh, in my 18 years of gaming that has also been true. I just liked the option, and didn't at all miss spell failure or spell-inability due to armor.
