Do you think if you just do damage enough to kill little minions even though you miss would it set off Cleave? I would assume no. Thoughts?

I think it would, by the rules... For Cleave, it doesn't say you have to hit them with the melee attack, just have to make a melee attack that reduces the target to 0 hp or less.

Have to agree with Quasadu. Cleave is not about the attack itself, it is more the rush of momentum you feel for besting a foe. Plus, I picture the reaper "close calls" as more of a glancing blow or inflicting a flesh wound. You are still 'missing the attack' because you did not intend to only give the goblin a papercut, but they say you can die if you get enough of them... so they say. If you see close calls like that, even though you 'miss' the minion, you didn't really miss him.

I kind of like the mental image of a very skilled fighter smoothly slaying all the weak foes that dare to stand before him.

Thats great if the fighter is very skilled, and the enemy is very weak.

I agree - with the fighter always doing at least a little bit of damage, and the wizard potentially doing a little auto-damage every round with at-will magic missle, I think it lessens the risk of getting into those fights where you have three or four rounds where poor die rolls means that nothing actually happens besides a bunch of people attacking and missing.
