I was wondering about the folowing should there be minimum ability scores for races, but not in a hard enforced way.

somthing like:
when asigning the ability score you rolled and you asign a score to a ability that is lower then the racial minimum you may chose the racial minimum instead.
if you decide to keep the score lower then your racial make up a intresting reason why your score is unusualy low.

you could use all scores of 10 as a baseline
if the race gets a +1 to a ability score use 12 as racial ninimum.
if it gets a -1 to a ability score  use 8 as racial minimum.

when using the point buy way of generating ability scores the array you would get before spending your points would be the racial minimums.

  • Why?
  • What useful purpose does it serve?
  • How is this not just another "I belive halflings should be weak and agile, therefore the rules of the game should make damn sure every player's halflings are weak and agile" mechanic?
  • What's to keep someone from dumping low rolls into scores that are instantly bumped to the minimum?

well the point buy system ( in earlyer editions) does not allouw low ability scores.
the minimum ability scores would ensure players who roll for their scores woulden't be placed at a disadvantage compared to those that do point buy generation.

this would bring the end result of point buy and roling closer together.
so if one player prefers the method of roling scores and another prefers the control of point boy they could each generate scores in the way they prefer without being at a disadvantage becouse of the chosen method of stat generation.

That's just.....  A really bad idea.
Because if someones chosen to roll their stats?  Then they're OK with getting low scores.  If they weren't?  They'd have chosen PB.  Instead, they accept that risk in order to enjoy the chance to roll up high stats.

In my opinion point buy works best if all players use it.  The point buy by it's intent is to have all of the PCs having equivalent ability scores.  This doesn't mean that all of the PCs will have the same amount of power, there are more factors in that than just ability scores, but having those be equivalent helps even out the PC power level somewhat.

I know players that despise point buy (often they say it encourages metagaming/power gaming).  When I DM I usually let them roll just so they can be happier, so I have seen/run campaigns where players use mixed point buy and roll ability score creation.

NEver liked rolled scores as a player, I'm that person who always seems to roll low on everything so I had to minmax just to keep up.

Much prefer point buy that way I'm not stuck playing a guy whose best stat is a 14 in a game where everyone else rolled nothing less than 16, and no I'm not hyperbolizing, I'm fairly sure most of them were cheating.

The problem with minimum scores is two fold, one it's already in the system for rolled stats generally 3-5 depending on race, ability score, and edition, two increasing the minimum stat means that people who roll in addition to being able to roll fantastically are no longer risking the truely abysmal scores that are supposed to 'balance' the chance of being an utter paragon. IF they're gonna roll I say let them take their risks and roll from a cup because they're propably trying to cheat.

I love rolling stats.
I hate playing with rolled stats.
What? I like to roll dice.

Stuff I Heard Mike Say (subject to change): Multiclassing will be different than in 3.5! That's important.
There is no level cap; classes advance ala 3.5 epic levels after a set level.
Mundane (AKA fighter and co) encounter and daily powers will probably not be in the PHB (for the lack of space), but nor will they be in some obscure book released halfway through the edition.

You can't please everyone, but you can please me.
I DO NOT WANT A FREAKING 4E REPEAT. I DO NOT WANT A MODULE THAT MIMICS MY FAVORITE EDITION. I WANT MODULES THAT MIMIC A PLAYSTYLE AND CAN BE INTERCHANGED TO COMPLETELY CHANGE THE FEEL, BUT NOT THE THEME, OF D&D. A perfect example would be an espionage module, or desert survival. A BAD EXAMPLE IS HEALING SURGES. WE HAVE 4E FOR THOSE! A good example is a way to combine a mundane and self healing module, a high-survival-rate module, and a separate pool of healing resource module.

I'm completely disinterested in rolled stats. I don't know how the whole D&D community feels about them. My sense is that rolling stats will still be presented, so it doesn't really matter what I think of it.

But I do know this: any attempt to bring rolling stats in line with the results of point-buy directly stomps on the reason people roll stats. It reduces the random element that people seem to like. I say let 'em have their silly, silly random element. I'll use my perfectly reasonable, predictable element instead.
I don't use emoticons, and I'm also pretty pleasant. So if I say something that's rude or insulting, it's probably a joke.

Mimimum stats works as a mechanic if you want to implement it instead of racial ability score modifiers.  For example, if instead of getting +1 Dex, an elf had "Minimum Dex: 12".

It would reduce the impact races have on characters with very high ability scores, but it would create the problem that it would put the same ceiling and dsitribution of a given high stat for all races.  So on average, half-orcs would still be stronger than humans; but Olympic weightlifters would be about the same, whether human or half-orc.

It doesn't really work if you also have a racial ability score modifier, because that means no one would really care about the minimum.
The difference between madness and genius is determined only by degrees of success.
