Fighter Design Goals
by Mike Mearls

This week, Mike tackles two subjects: the playtest and fighters. To find out more about what to expect from your playtest experience, read on! To learn more about what’s going on with the fighter, well, we have you covered there, too!

Talk about this column here.

Sounds good to me!
"I don't want to fight dragons." - Hiccup

If dragons are to be invovled, I much prefer to play as a dragon, dragon rider, dragonslayer-slayer, dragonfriend, or anything else *but* a dragonslayer.

Playtest: *shrugs* Sounds good.

Fighter: Sounds great.  I just hope that, either through options on the class, or the way the core system works in general, he can be decent at things other than fighting, as well.  Not the best at things-other-than-fighting, but not the mostly-useless lump of meat that he has traditionally been.

Also: This is pretty much exactly what I've been asking for for a while: A glimpse at how they're looking at the Fighter, with a positive attitude toward it, that sounds exciting.

Yes, I am expressing my opinions (even complaints - le gasp!) about the current iteration of the play-test that we actually have in front of us.

No, I'm not going to wait for you to tell me when it's okay to start expressing my concerns (unless you are WotC).

(And no, my comments on this forum are not of the same tone or quality as my actual survey feedback.)

I hope they give us a Goals article for every class before they release them!

Mixed opinions, mostly positive.

What I don't like is that most of the unique points on the Fighetr are also the most boring: hits hard, hits often, and can take hits. We've seen this all before; it's not at all inspiring.

That said, I do like that versatility in all arms is a quality that's exclusive to Fighters once more since AD&D.  I'm also laughing with joy that the Linear Fighter/Quadratic Wizard problem will be addressed by design. But what pleases me most is the shout-outs to mythical warriors; hopefully now Fighters will be as awesome by default.

on #6.
If a fighter has to take down that wave one at a time, or be dependent on the Cleave feat-tree to do it, we've already failed.
For reference: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzrDSHcvX8w

As for the playtest, this pretty much the exact right way to do it.  If the parts don't work with the minimum basics, throwing on more races, classes, feats, etc. isn't going to help, and will just end up requiring buckets of eratta and/or a ".5 Edition" later.

Seems pretty encouraging. I'm especially glad that they seem to be set on ensuring the Fighter doesn't get the short end of the stick when it comes to options and battlefield presence.

We're using standard edition war rules.  No posts of substance.  Do not read the other person's posts with comprehension.  Make frequent comparison to video games, MMOs, and CCGs.  Use the words "fallacy" and "straw man", incorrectly and often.  Passive aggressiveness gets you extra points and asking misleading and inflammatory questions is mandatory.  If you're getting tired, just declare victory and leave the thread.  Wait for the buzzer... and....

One, two, three, four, I declare Edition War
Five, six, seven eight, I use the web to

D&D should not return to the days of blindfolding the DM and players. No tips on encounter power? No mention of expected party roles? No true meaning of level due to different level charts or tiered classes? Please, let's not sacrifice clear, helpful rules guidelines in favour of catering to the delicate sensibilities of the few who have problems with the ascetics of anything other than what they are familiar with.

Just a quick note on the MMORPG as an insult comparison...

MMORPGs, raking in money by the dumptruck full.  Many options, tons of fans across many audiences, massive resources allocated to development.

TTRPGs, dying product.  Squeaking out an existence that relys on low cost.  Fans fit primarily into a few small demographics.  R&D budgets small, often rushed to market and patched after deployment.

You're not really making much of an argument when you compare something to a MMORPG and assume people think that means bad.  Lets face it, they make the money, have the audience and the budget.  We here on this board are fans of TTRPGs but lets not try to pretend none of us play MMORPGs.

Telling someone to move over a few feet is magical now? :|

I weep for this generation.

Given the laziness and morbid obsesity amongst D&Ders, being able to convince someone to get on their feet, do some heavy exercise, and use their words to make them be healthier must seem magical.

I like the look of things for the Fighter so far.

I just really hope that Fighters get something to do out of combat as well.

Seems Mike listened to what I've been saying about the Fighter.

I wonder how weapon specialization will fit with the fighter is the best no matter which weapon he uses.
