OK, off topic but where do you live? Which state/country/area?

Lets get a game found for you, this will not do.

Are you in Washington State and near the Olympia/Seattle area?

No.  I'm in Michigan.  I live in an area with two state recreation areas and a lot of little lakes, so most people in my area are into outdoor activites instead of indoor hobbies.  I have to drive almost 10 miles to get to a comic book store (and even that isn't much bigger than my living room).

Where, exactly, MechaPilot?  I'm in Walled Lake myself.  The area you describe just about describes all of Michigan, particularly where I live.

Reflavoring: the change of flavor without changing any mechanical part of the game, no matter how small, in order to fit the mechanics to an otherwise unsupported concept.
Retexturing: the change of flavor (with at most minor mechanical adaptations) in order to effortlessly create support for a concept without inventing anything new.
Houseruling: the change, either minor or major, of the mechanics in order to better reflect a certain aspect of the game, including adapting the rules to fit an otherwise unsupported concept.
Homebrewing: the complete invention of something new that fits within the system in order to reflect an unsupported concept.

Default module =/= Core mechanic.

My group gets together about 20 times a year. Every 2 weeks with time off here and there.
All of my players keep a character journal and make entries every session. Before a session starts they review their journals, compare notes and are right back in to it.
We recently had a 4 month break due to scheduling conflicts and after a journal review everyone was right back in the head space of their character. Was perfect.

I've got to say I've come to really despise this type of campaign - at least to despise that it's become the default. In the mid 1970's, people with full-time jobs could run a nightly campaign at their place, with room for dozens of players. What's changed? Is it just that we really, really like TV now?

Please tell more about the nightly campaign with dozens of players. That sounds like fun.

When I started playing none of us had kids and we didn't need so much sleep nor a life outside D&D, so we played more often than we do now. At the same time we played the boxed sets which are fairly close to the macgame mentioned in the original post, so we had time to fight a lot of monsters in a single evening.

DISCLAIMER: I never played 4ed, so I may misunderstand some of the rules.

Really?  So it goes something like this?

Fighter: "I want to be a paladin."
NPC: "Really?"
Fighter: "Yes."
NPC: "Very well."  Starts reading from a holy book while still in-character "Do you accept having to choose and stick to the lawful good alignment, eventhough neither of us actually knows that it exists or what it is?"
Fighter: "I do."
NPC: "Do you reject good game balance because you accidentally rolled a high Charisma?"
Fighter: "What?"
NPC: "I don't know what it means either."
Fighter: "Oh.  Umm, ok I do."
NPC: "In the name of all that is metagamey and broken, accept these better game enhancing mechanics."
Fighter: "These what?"
NPC: "Just get out there and try to fulfill a million different people's notion of good while not violating and part of any of them."

Yeah, you are literally 10 minutes away from me, if that.  Are you looking to DM or to play?  Or...... playtest 5E, perchance?

I think a one hour game is going to be something rare.  It might be a nice option for lunchtime groups.  But the 4 hour game I believe is probably the norm.  People do still play weekends for longer periods of time of course and young people hey they might do more than that.   But I think it's reasonable to expect 4 hours as a nice minimum.  I'd like to clear a level of a dungeon in that time though and not 2 rooms.

I think you'd be surprised at how many D&D groups are around you, how many lapsed players would be interested in a game if you offered to run one. D&D has been around for close to 40 years. It's got a fanbase from 16 to 60. Lots of these guys don't advertise their games even when there's space in them, and the lapsed ones don't go searching on the Internet to find games.

So, put up signs. Get a Google Voice phone number with voicemail, put the number on a few dozen flyers, and paste them in a 30-mile radius. Laundromats, rec centers, community colleges/universities, game stores, hobby shops, computer shops, etc. Sometimes the local Alternative Papers have free personal classifieds.

I'm clean, I don't smoke, I'm not a raving neckbeard, I won't steal your beer, your pizza, or your girlfriend. I'm a pretty awesome dude, all around. I want to play D&D. I'll run the game or play in it. Gimme a call if you're interested. 555-DAND

I think you might be surprised how many calls you get.

I've been tempted to start a FB group (shudder) dedicated to the same principle.  While I live near a metropolitan area (within 30 miles or so of Seattle), since I use mass transit I have my own issues finding a game.

In my last group, we took turns DM'ing, so I'm comfortable doing both playing and DM'ing.  I haven't played in a while, due to lack of a group and devoting large quantities of time to my studies, so I'm rusty on the rules.  As for being willing to playtest 5e, heck yes I'm willing.
