I dread a multitude of sub-systems, so hopefully they can develop a couple for each side of the the fence when considering martial versus casters. So martial classes may have maneuvers, stances, and heroic efforts, while casters have vancian, spontaneous casting, or something similar.

What I don't want is a new sub-system appearing each time a class is created from another module or rulebook. What I do want is a framework that defines an overall set of systems for each type of class, so we can maintain a sense of balance and expectations moving forward.

Yeah, I think think the Warrior classes: Fighter, Ranger and Paladin could all use the same system for their martial maneuvers. The ranger and the paladin could use the same system as the cleric for their spell like maneuvers.

Although it wouldn't bother me if there was a different system for each class as it would give me more options to choose from when creating my own stuff.

How about giving none of the classes nova features? Or so little nova potential that it doesn't really matter.

You mean I can play the side-kick to the guy who wins the game with climactic amounts of awesome. Sign me up, I just think fading in to the background with repetitive base line impact that nobody notices.. is great.

Improvisation in 4e: Improv. Attacks(by wrecan) - Fave 4E Improvisations

The Non-combatant Adventurer

Reality is unrealistic - and even monkeys protest unfairness

Dynamic Reflavoring : The Fighter : The Wizard : The Swordmage
Creative Character Collection - Featuring:The Faerie Master - Snow White - Joxer - Ironman - Elric - Bloodwright

By virtue of being a player your characters are the protagonists in a heroic fantasy game even at level one

Your lack of imagination is astounding. Did it ever occur to you that there might be version of D&D where everybody does something cool at every combat? (and no, that's not 4th edition).

I think the spell mechanic I heard talked about where fireball is always a 3rd level spell that does 5d6 or a 4th level spell that does 6d6 or a 5th level spell that does 7d6 will allieviate some of the perceived unbalance that spellcasters create. The more powerful that any spell a wizard casts is the less other spells he'll be able to cast. Which funny enough is how things were supposed to be from the get go.

EDIT:
Has anyone here checked out the wheel of time magic system. Its good and thats kind of how I see things going.

Sorry too busy  wondering whether I can convince the Druidzilla and his pet not to make Robin the boy wonder look silly as he fails his special moves time and again because he isnt a one trick pony..

Gnarl: Note I misunderstood your comment.. and thought you were saying none of the non-vancian classes since we know damn well we got Vance back.. .so the other idea is a pipe dream for 6e (perhaps).

Could encounter based emphasis work? Sure....

I really think all these problems would be solved with an endurance mechanic. Rest and endurance comes back ; basically plays the same as per encounter powers but doesn't have the de-simulating feel that some people don't like.
