I don't think I'd ever click on something on the internet titled "Long Division."

Why Mechanics-Alignment Integration is Bad Show

so why even play a fighter if you can play the paladin the exact same way behaviorally and get added power to boot. "Paladin" is about accepting better game-enhancing mechanics at the price of more rigid in game behavior.

Really?  So it goes something like this?

Fighter: "I want to be a paladin."
NPC: "Really?"
Fighter: "Yes."
NPC: "Very well."  Starts reading from a holy book while still in-character "Do you accept having to choose and stick to the lawful good alignment, eventhough neither of us actually knows that it exists or what it is?"
Fighter: "I do."
NPC: "Do you reject good game balance because you accidentally rolled a high Charisma?"
Fighter: "What?"
NPC: "I don't know what it means either."
Fighter: "Oh.  Umm, ok I do."
NPC: "In the name of all that is metagamey and broken, accept these better game enhancing mechanics."
Fighter: "These what?"
NPC: "Just get out there and try to fulfill a million different people's notion of good while not violating and part of any of them."

Well some might be, the sun doesn't rise and set on any one edition (I ldig them all); things like Zen Archery in 3rd Ed are pretty cool.

Consider this:

Every class ever fits in there somewhere (except in 1974 when the "utility" point didn't exist yet)

@Qmark The only problem I see with that diagram is that magic is simply an alternate way to accomplish "Utility" and "Violence." Since spells generally have either utility or violence as their end, Magic doesn't constitute an end in and of itself. Though maybe that's more of a problem of class design than the descriptive usefulness of your diagram.

I agree with Nelyo.  Magic is a means; violence and utility are the ends.

And not only is magic a means, it is A means.  I do not want it to be THE means.  If the DDN non-casters require magic gear to keep up with the casters, then I will be most displeased.

Apparently then, armor type is only relevant when the best AC is attainable solely by means of wearing a particular armor type. If other armor types can achieve the same AC by totally different means, then it's all cosmetic.

Which is ridiculous. The fact that two similar means have the same end does not make them identical, especially when "the same end" is myopically focused on a single number, not on the cost it takes to reach that number nor on any other benefits that may accrue from pursuing different means to a high AC.

I think Fighters should get a level dependant bonus to AC.  Not just access to the highest AC armor.

If your playing a Fighter and aren't picturing them in Full Plate, you have to start jumping through hoops to acheive that same defensive advantage.  Maybe a little less point buy in Con and bump up your Dex.  Hmm, but if you could move it from Str to Dex... maybe there is a Feat that will let me attack wtih Dex.  There is, but what about damage?  Oh another Feat!  I mean what if your in a pirate themed campaign, there should still be the Fighter type w all it's benefits just because no one is running around in platemail.

Same for all the Fighter offshoots, Rangers should get a smaller bonus to AC even though Dex builds are easier with them.  Paladin in Hell in Studded Leather?  Barbarians could go topless, like we all know they want to.

I would like a feasible way for the Fighter to be able to strip to his bare and ass and throw himself (sans weapon) into melee like Beowulf.
