Rule-of-Three (2012 April 17th)by Rodney Thompson You've got questions—we've got answers! Here's how it works—each week, our Community Manager will be scouring all available sources to find whatever questions you're asking. We'll pick three of them for R&D to answer. Talk about this news here.

"We're still in early alpha, people! PLEASE stop asking things like this" : Ok. "Weapons are basically as you expect. We're trying to make the choice basically cosmetic, though there will probably be different damage types." : Yes, this is totally new and unexpected information. "There's going to be a floor on how useless a character can be in any of the three pillars. Other than that, go wild." : Cool!
"Enjoy your screams, Sarpadia - they will soon be muffled beneath snow and ice." These seem like pretty disappointing questions to have picked to answer. Nothing's really very meaty, and a lot of it we already knew. The part that I hate worst is the answer to the first one. It's like cheating us an answer because we didn't know the right thing to ask.

If it gets people to stop asking, I think it's a question well spent.

If it doesn't get us an answer, then it's a wasted question. If they wanted to say "Stop asking about stuff like X, Y, and Z", then they could and probably should have done so separately. Ro3 is valuable to us because it's one of the few things that's supposed to give us insight into what exactly it is that they're doing, so selecting a question and giving an answer to that question that really amount to no answer at all and on top of that tell us to stop asking those questions... well, that makes me feel cheated one question.

So, when it comes to customization points, we want to let people choose what they want to focus on (be that combat, diplomacy, being the best liar ever, being a super stealthy thief, or whatever) and trust the baseline competence we've built into all characters to make sure everyone feels like they can participate.
That's not allowing customization, it's rewarding system mastery, pushing the meta-game at the expense of the actual game. Customization would be allowing meaningful choices among balanced options /within/ each pillar.

I have every faith in the comminuty that it won't even put a decent dent in people asking.
- No new information here.
- Who was asking this? This is such a mundane, pointless question to have answered. And we gave them whole thread full of pointed, meaningful questions and everything.
- They're going to go right on trucking mixing up their combat and non-combat resources. Oh, but we can't trade all of them. You never could, though.
Very disappointing week. Two evasions and one disappointing answer.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

I love customization. Like casting more Time Stop instead of Meteor Swarm. Oh, the sacrifices I make to stay in character.
Ed_Warlord, on what it takes to make a thread work: I think for it to be really constructive, everyone would have to be honest with each other, and with themselves. Quotation of the moment

Areleth: How does this help the problems we have with Fighters? Do you think that every time I thought I was playing D&D what I was actually doing was slamming my head in a car door and that if you just explain how to play without doing that then I'll finally enjoy the game? TD: That's why they put me on the front of every book. This is the dungeon, and I am the dragon.
A word of warning though: I'm totally not a level appropriate encounter.

+1 to this. The third answer is VERY disappointing. It was one of the things I was looking forward to D&D Next for. That, and an even better encounter creation paradigm (daily based experience point total sounds nice if it works). If D&D Next can't give me those, I don't know why should I bother, really. To get "traditional" stuff back? Hell no. To get Vancian casting back? I'll be damned before I accept it in my game again. To see how fighters are balanced towards crazy powerful wizards? Wait, I already have that.
Seriously, the only things I dislike about 4E right now are out-of-combat parity and the fact that having one encounter per day at higher levels is virtually impossible (if you wish to challenge the players without having TPK risks). Oh, and the fact that combat could be a bit faster too.
One of those is being confirmed as "no way we're going to do that". Some other things I like in 4E are being kicked out (cool casters, for one thing; a focus on balance, for another). Now I'll just wait for them to say that they'll screw up encounter balance some way or another and I'm done.

The third answer seemed both a cop out and evasive to me. The question was about wether or not combat and non combat would be sharing the same resource pool or not, it had nothing to do with base character ability levels. From the sound of it they wanted to avoid the backlash of their choice. If you make a choice and man up! Answering questions like this will only lead to accusations of mistruth and misinformation.
I get the feeling that the true answer is that they will share the same pool so people will have to choose one of the pillars to play with. Of course they dont want people to think this as they have stated previously that they want people involved in all 3 aspects.
