You can still play on the VT without DDI, though finding games is a little problematic because I believe the forums used are group-restricted...I may ask if we can get that changed.

Anyway, assuming you do find a game, the DM will give you a code that gives you access, even without DDI.

Yeah the BETA forums for the D&D VT are currently off limit to community members without DDi and require an invitation, but playing on the VT is still possible now with the Code system.

I did run a D&D 4E session for community members without DDi not long ago (community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...) and it was pretty cool, so when D&D Next enters public Playtest,  i may do it again.

Even though the VT is conceptually a 4E tool, it is possible to adapt to earlier (or future) editions of D&D quite easily!
