OK, there are the four classic archetypes: fighter, rogue, wizard and arcane...but.. soomer or later players want other archetypes, other classes, and we have rangers, paladin, bard, druid, socerer, barbarian, monk, warlock, warlord/marshall/caudillo.
I´m sure WotC thinks handbooks with "core" classes are sold better. The key is wondering why a archetype isn´t only a sub-class with a different list of class features.
Other adventage is if some archetype is a class new subclasses/themes can be created. For example: samurai of clan.. (lion, crab, crane, scorpion, phoenix, mantis, dragon..) or ninja from hidden village of (leads, clouds, mist, rocks, whirling tides, rain, sound..), monk of temple of (tiger, monkey, mantis, snake, crane...), shugenja of (air, fire, water, earth, metal, wood..), knight of order of (rose, crown, sword, of Tarkhisis, of sancrist isle..).
"Say me what you're showing off for, and I'll say you what you lack!" (Spanish saying)

I'm shocked the orc got him. He always seems so mild mannered. I am insanely curious what he said.
I think he got my quote, not me.

Reflavoring: the change of flavor without changing any mechanical part of the game, no matter how small, in order to fit the mechanics to an otherwise unsupported concept. Retexturing: the change of flavor (with at most minor mechanical adaptations) in order to effortlessly create support for a concept without inventing anything new. Houseruling: the change, either minor or major, of the mechanics in order to better reflect a certain aspect of the game, including adapting the rules to fit an otherwise unsupported concept. Homebrewing: the complete invention of something new that fits within the system in order to reflect an unsupported concept. Ideas for 5ESpoiler:

I've really learned a lot in these debates. Even if it just clarifies your position and helps you identify games where you will be happy then good has happened.
I've also noticed that people do change over time. I've seen a person make my own argument back to me five years later and not even realize it. Thats when you realize that sometimes it just takes time. Also, sometimes they become stronger in their own views. With a game, there really is no right or wrong answer.
I think 5e catering to different styles is wonderful. We all had styles before 5e. We just banged into each other and after a lot of friction found out who we liked playing with. Now hopefully we can expose the different playstyles better and get groups where we will be happy right from the start.
Also I think theMormegil is a nice guy. Just don't prefer his flavor of gaming. I'm shocked the orc got him. He always seems so mild mannered. I am insanely curious what he said.
Indeed. I've observed the same things. And for what it's worth, as often as I disagree with you, I very rarely find myself annoyed when debating with you.
(also, I wish I could remember what I posted that merited my entire post being deleted...cuz I'm pretty sure it didn't...)
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

Thanks Doctor. I think we all accidentally push buttons sometimes. I honestly am surprised someone got so mad at times. On the other hand, I think there are people/trolls out there who like to push for the fun of it. I appreciate those I disagree with actually more when it comes to these boards. Other viewpoints are valuable in helping to assess your own. I also realize that we focus on our differences and not on our similarities because conflict is interesting and agreement is not. At least on boards that is. I appreciate your input.

I'm glad. I can be somewhat abbrasive in my argumentation, mostly from years of being a liberal in a conservative town with a terrible education record, so it's always good when someone gets that I'm not trying to a jerk. :D

@DoctorBadWolf, Kalnaur
I've been missing you Kalnaur
And I missed you too. Even if sometimes you make me want to beat my head against a wall until I fall unconscious due to how you interpret people's vies that rest outside your purview. I missed you because as of yet you seem genuine in wanting to make the game better not just for yourself but for everyone here. The same cannot be said for others, and my block list is now long and filled with people who just seem to assume that "they know best". Provided that you continue to strive for a more accepting game of all play-styles, even if you misrepresent what the intentions of those play-styles are, I will continue to read most of your posts.
And to miss you when I go on my sanity restoring sabbaticals.
"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." --Bill Cosby (1937- )Vanador: OK. You ripped a gateway to Hell, killed half the town, and raised the dead as feral zombies. We're going to kill you. But it can go two ways. We want you to run as fast as you possibly can toward the south of the town to draw the Zombies to you, and right before they catch you, I'll put an arrow through your head to end it instantly. If you don't agree to do this, we'll tie you this building and let the Zombies rip you apart slowly. Dimitry: God I love being Neutral. 4th edition is dead, long live 4th edition.Salla: opinionated, but commonly right. fun quotes

You have to do the work first, and show you can do the work, before someone is going to pay you for it.
If you can't understand how someone yelling at another person would make them fight harder and longer, then you need to look at the forums a bit closer.

Sanity restoring sabbaticals are good. I've been on a few myself. Some voluntary and others involuntary.
I won't mention names (not you) but I've seen a few people on these boards come back far calmer than they left which is a good thing.

Would you want the following to be a full class, a build, or a theme.
Wizard Illusionist Necromancer Pyromancer Cryromancer Summoner Artificer
Paladin Avenger Cleric Medic Invoker
Ranger Druid Beastmaster Barbarian Warden Seeker
Assassin Rogue Thief Ruffian Executioner Shadow Dancer
Fighter Archer Knight Slayer Tempest Monk
Warlord Tactical Warlord Marshal Inspiring Warlord Bard
Psion Telekinetic Ardent Battlemind
Other?
All classes. You should be able to play whatever character you want from day 1.
Also, was just wondering what a "Cryomancer" is supposed to be?
P.S.
You can play just about all of the above classes in my own RPG, Challenger, right from the get-go.
Thanks for posting such a great thread, Mellored.
