Maybe I'm Old fashion when it comes to races but besides elf dwarf humans Halfling They added Eladrin dragonborn tiefling. Hey I am fine with those races. I see Eladrin as the old Grey elves I'm fine with tiefling dragonborn point of lights ancient history. FR drop out of the sky was just stupid but let's get back to races. Personally I think some of tfe races added in PHB 2,3 are out there. Changing? Common. Minotaur? Don't get me wrong I played one way before 4th when Krynn was part of the world map with FR etc all together Hey. If they want to change the gnome back to a class then fine. But when monsters evil monsters like gnolls goblins can be a player race it's just to much. Like a sitcom adding a new cast because rating were dropping which usually made it last for one season. If that's tfe case then let's get really into it. Make every Monater Manual Race playable. I don't care if that means I'm a dinosaur Mage , rust monster thief , ghost cleric, death knight paladin who became anti paladin who is now a paladin again. I want a beholder barbarian, I want to play a pit fiend Druid. I want play a shambling mound ranger. Why not. If you can Be a gnoll then don't be hypocrites when making the playable races.

Why is having more options a bad thing? Goblins and Changelings play a very big part in Eberron. Minotaur in Dragonlance. Monster races are on a case by case basis. They will print whatever is popular. I, personally, love Kobolds. The sooner they can get them in as playable, the happier I am (as long as they don't make the. severely underpowered like kn 3.5 and PF. The more that is available, the better. If you don't like a race, don't play it. I guarantee there will e someone out there who does like it, though.

I don't mind options but lets at least keep the core books with the core races. As for core races I'd like to see assimar, elves, dragonborn, dwarves, gensai, gnomes, half-elves, half-orcs, humans, teifling. However, don't put limits on what race can be part of what class. DMs can do that if it fits their world/campaign.

If WOTC wants to go beyond the Tolkien races, then they should probably aim for the races from World of warcraft. Young people today dont know what a wilden is but they do know a that the minotaur is a big dancing creature with horns. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEWgs6YQR9A (Silly video wanrning)
DISCLAIMER: I never played 4ed, so I may misunderstand some of the rules.

I'd rather they brought back more 2e planescape races than something from WoW. Having a Celestial or Fiendish ancestor in the family tree is more plausable in more campaigns than trying to force in WoW races into every prime world. Even the Elemental/Djinn descendents (Genasai) make more sense than something like Draeni, Tauren, or even Blood Elves.

I'd rather see them bring in good races, regardless of the source.
Though just for kicks, I'll point out that tieflings and genasi are both printed in 4e, and for those who aren't willing to accept Deva as the revamped Aasimar, there is at least one other mechanic to represent having celestial blood.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

While having more options is good, there are certain limits inherent in the nature of the game:
- Regardless of the rules set, a character race should be able to use tools (being of more than animal intelligence and having prehensile appendages help). Playing a rust monster is not that great an idea -- you'd have to spend the entire campaign creating and eating rust. On the other hand, being evil is not as much of an hindrance -- you can easily have a non-evil Goblin or Orc, but not an intelligent, sword-wielding rust monster.
- A given ruleset may, by design, impose some limits on what races it can support -- e.g., 4e doesn't support (well) non-humanoid races or races that are not Medium or Small sized. However, this is never justified when "natural" humanoids are involved.
- There are physical limits to the core books. 4e MM provides basic stats for Goblins, Orcs, etc., but this is different from supporting a given race (within the assumptions of 4e). Which means there's a priority to what races go in the core books (Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings, chiefly). That said, as long as there's space there's no reason not to offer other options.
That is about as far as limits go -- everything else is fair game. And Goblins and Gnolls have been playable races since BECMI. If you don't want to play one, or don't want that race to be available in your campaign, that's of course legitimate, but other people may enjoy playing less traditional races, or even an entire campaign on the goblinoids' side. G.

There are limited resources, so where do you want those resources spent? I always want to play a lizardfolk, too much Land of the Lost as a kid I guess. I don't see why they shouldn't have some playable race mechanics for it. But I certainly don't expect lizardfolk to bump dwarves out of the PH for core races.
WotC has to make choices. When they are trying to convince you to buy three or more PHs then they hold the gnome for the PH2 and introduce something cool like the minotaur for PH3. I really hope Next doesn't do this, one PH to play the whole game. Throw some playable race info in the MMs, but I only want one PH.

A lot of this is going to depend on what goes into making a race, and how much fluff they plan to include with each one. That being said personally I would like the usual 4 (elf, human, dwarf, halfling) with those that showed up later (dragonborn, warforged, eldarin, tiefling). Although I would really prefer 10 or more races and wouldn't mind them including gnome, and goliath.
Finally I actually cannot have enough races, if they are well designed.
