I agree. 4th made each class equal with importance. Everyone did same amount of damage. I like most of 4th. In fact if they reduced fourth to basic rules and took somebod the rest as advanced options it would be done. Although my view of how the books should be I think is on the right path. This allows them to sell more books but the books would be more defined for what they offer.

If I the combat-effective character find that I am constantly risking my a** to save yours in combat while you contribute nothing* to combat, eventually it's going to stop happening.
In one of two ways:
a) I'm going to actively try to leave you behind, at a nice safe inn or the like, when combat is at all likely. b) I'm going to just stop rescuing you and let you die.
Unless you give me a really good reason to do otherwise. Party cohesion is not a good reason. Delivering you to some location and getting a big reward might be a good reason - and as soon as we get to that location, I leave you behind.
* By "nothing" I do not mean "less than me" or "only by distracting enemies which creates openings for the rest of us" or "only by healing us". I mean, literally, nothing. The character that makes the Animal Master theme's Animal Minion look good in combat.
"The world does not work the way you have been taught it does. We are not real as such; we exist within The Story. Unfortunately for you, you have inherited a condition from your mother known as Primary Protagonist Syndrome, which means The Story is interested in you. It will find you, and if you are not ready for the narrative strands it will throw at you..." - from Footloose

As the OP said the biggest competitor for DnD, especilay 4E, was and will be the backlog now there's nothing Wotc can do about this and they must realize it, I don't wnat them going around and confiscating the old books.
What I don't want even more is for Wotc to try "the be like our competitor " strategy since their competitor will be the backlogs so my "what will get me to buy DnD Next" is simple: innovate don't retrofit go forwards not backwards.
I don't want to buy ADnD Basic or 3.5 or etc not because I allready have those books, I don't , except 3.5 but I've stopped using them, but because I recognize the flaws those editions have and don't want to play them anymore when a new edition solved those flaws, so if DnD Next is like 4E in that it isn't afraid to correct flaws and innovate I'll buy it.

Good point. Problem is after so many editions how much more new stuff can they come up with. It's like school books with new editions. Very little change.

So I take it you've never been forced to take a younger sibling to a pickup football, baseball or basketball game, then? Seriously, there's reasons to keep people with you. First is family, second is friendship - and those are notable cuz they're no-brainers. It's really not that difficult to find a reason for.
By the way, I personally wasn't suggesting that the character in question be played with zero combat ability. All I'm sayin' is a little variety in power level is just fine. You do a ton of damage or have awesome effects and I do some damage with some not really great effects. I'll try to be good at combat, I just won't be. Like my 3.5 Beguiler (one of my all time favorite characters). He tried, but he sucked. Thing is, he made up for all of that outside of combat. So, where my Wizard and Fighter friends shined, I did not. Where they didn't, I did. And we all had fun.
Though I did once play a game with a pal that actually did nothing in combat. Like, nothing at all. By choice. And we all really, really enjoyed that character. He was hilarious. Why did battle hardened adventurers accept this party mate? Well, we met him and were immediately told what he could and couldn't do. The other stuff, to us, made him a worthy companion so we put up with his aversion to combat. And, like I said, the player was really amusing with it. The most interesting part? He was a Wizard. Specialized in Teleporting and defense, as a matter of fact. Er, personal defense. Good times.
Resident Prophet of the OTTer.Section Six Soldier Front Door of the House of Trolls If you're terribly afraid of your character dying, it may be best if you roleplayed something other than an adventurer.

The following will get me to buy D&DN: WotC hires better fluff writers and increases the maturity level of the game by taking the elements of the worlds they have been created to their logical conclusions instead of skirting around issues.
In my games players have always been Exceptional individuals, not Exceptions to the internal logic of the game world.

True, but those are all NPCs, or PCs at your level of power.

You ripped a gateway to Hell, killed half the town, and raised the dead as feral zombies. We're going to kill you. But it can go two ways. We want you to run as fast as you possibly can toward the south of the town to draw the Zombies to you, and right before they catch you, I'll put an arrow through your head to end it instantly. If you don't agree to do this, we'll tie you this building and let the Zombies rip you apart slowly. As the party healer, I would go with B. That extends to people playing with the tactical sense of a carrot. If you're doing your job without being a reckless derp, you'll get healing support. Having never seen a character who literally does nothing in combat, I have to wonder why these characters get XP from combat at all, or how the other players feel would feel about it. (I mean, it's not like you get XP from either watching arena deathmatches or merely running away and hiding from monsters.)
4e D&D is not a "Tabletop MMO." It is not Massively Multiplayer, and is usually not played Online. Come up with better descriptions of your complaints, cuz this one means jack ****.
